Fattoria Pianetti
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Fattoria Pianetti, I thought my GPS had led me astray. You’re driving through this gorgeous Tuscan countryside near Manciano (about 20 minutes from the coast, if you’re wondering), and suddenly there’s this beautifully restored farmhouse tucked into the hillside at Località Le Fabbre. It’s one of those places that feels like a well-kept secret, which honestly, it sort of is.
The thing about staying here is that you really get the authentic agriturismo experience without any of the roughing-it nonsense. I mean, sure, you’re surrounded by olive groves and vineyards – the morning light hitting those fields is absolutely stunning – but your room has proper air conditioning and a bathroom that doesn’t require an engineering degree to figure out. The owners (who actually live on the property) have done this thoughtful renovation where they kept all the original stone walls and terracotta floors, but everything works like it should in a proper 4-star place. The Wi-Fi is solid too, which matters more than I’d like to admit.
What really sets this place apart is the location – you’re genuinely in the heart of Maremma, which is this incredible part of southern Tuscany that most tourists completely miss. Manciano itself is about a 10-minute drive, and it’s got this fantastic Saturday market and a couple of restaurants that locals actually eat at (try Da Caino if you can get a reservation). But honestly, some of my best memories were just sitting on the terrace in the evening with a glass of their house wine – they produce their own, naturally – watching the sun set over the countryside. It’s dead quiet except for the occasional sheep bell, which sounds cheesy but is actually pretty magical. The thermal baths at Saturnia are maybe 15 minutes away, and the beaches around Orbetello are totally doable as a day trip. Parking is never an issue, by the way – there’s plenty of space, and you’ll definitely want a car out here. The breakfast spread is generous (proper local cheeses, fresh bread, their own honey), and the staff genuinely seems to care about making sure you know about the hidden gems in the area. It’s the kind of place where you plan to stay two nights and end up wishing you’d booked four.
