Fattoria di Colleoli
Palaia, ItalyYou know what hits you first when you pull up to Fattoria di Colleoli? The fact that you’re actually staying at a working farm – and I mean that in the best possible way. This isn’t some sanitized “farm experience” they’ve cooked up for tourists. Via Cerreto winds through proper Tuscan countryside, and when you turn into their driveway, you’re suddenly surrounded by olive groves that have been here longer than most cities back home.
The whole setup is honestly pretty brilliant. They’ve converted these old farm buildings into guest rooms, but they did it right – keeping all the stone walls and wooden beams while making sure you’ve got proper air conditioning (trust me, you’ll want it in July). The rooms have this lived-in feel that’s actually comfortable, not like you’re sleeping in a museum. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – you’re far enough from the main road that all you hear are crickets and maybe the occasional owl. The staff genuinely seems to know every guest by name within a day or two, which is pretty remarkable for a place this size.
Here’s what they don’t tell you in the booking photos: the breakfast spread is absolutely ridiculous. I’m talking about eggs from their own chickens, olive oil they pressed last season, and this incredible local cheese that I’m pretty sure you can’t get anywhere else. The dining area looks out over the valley, and if you time it right – say, around 8 AM when the light hits just so – you’ll understand why people lose their minds over Tuscany. The location is actually perfect for day trips too. San Miniato is maybe fifteen minutes away (great for truffle hunting if you’re into that), and you can hit both Volterra and San Gimignano without feeling like you’re spending your entire vacation in a car.
Honestly, the 8.6 rating makes sense once you’ve been there. It’s not trying to be some luxury resort – the pool is nice but not Olympic-sized, and don’t expect a full spa or anything like that. But what they do, they do really well. The owners clearly live on the property, which gives it this authentic family feel that’s hard to fake. I actually ended up extending my stay an extra night because leaving felt weird, like I was ditching friends. Just a heads up though – if you’re someone who needs to be walking distance from restaurants and shops, this might not be your scene. You’ll definitely want a car, and the nearest real town is Palaia, which is charming but not exactly bustling with nightlife.

My experience with their staff is highly positive. The communication was great, we got responses via booking.com very quickly, and they explained everything in the details. They really went above and beyond to take care of our stay, honestly the best experience with the hotel personnel I've ever had.
What could be improved: Nothing to complain about :) Just make sure that you check the hotel location in a map to plan your transportation and journey.
What could be improved: Mosquito nets are highly needed. A lot of smelly bugs, but they can be tolerated.
What could be improved: I wish there was a dishwasher
What could be improved: Kitchen rather basic
