Dante States Apartments
Florence, ItalySo I stumbled across Dante States Apartments basically by accident when my original Florence booking fell through last minute, and honestly? Best travel mishap ever. You know how some places just get it right without trying too hard – this is one of those spots.
The location is what really sells it, I mean, Via Dei Neri is this narrow medieval street that feels like you’re walking through a movie set, except it’s real and there are actual Florentines buying groceries at the corner shop. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Uffizi – not “walking distance” like hotels love to claim, but actually two minutes of cobblestones and you’re there. The Ponte Vecchio is close enough that you can hear the street musicians in the evening if you crack your window. What I didn’t expect was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re smack in the centro storico. Sure, there’s some chatter from people heading to dinner around eight, but by ten it’s surprisingly peaceful.
The apartments themselves have this perfect balance of historic charm without feeling like you’re staying in a museum. My room had these gorgeous high ceilings with original beams – the kind of details that make you want to take photos but also just sit and appreciate them. The bathroom was modern enough that the shower actually had decent water pressure (fellow travelers, you know this matters), and there was a little kitchenette that I ended up using way more than expected. There’s something satisfying about making morning coffee while looking out at medieval rooftops. The staff here actually seems to care – when I mentioned I was trying to catch the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo, the guy at reception drew me a route on a map that avoided the tourist crowds. Small thing, but it made a difference.
Here’s what I really appreciated: they get that you’re not just sleeping here, you’re living in Florence for a few days. The neighborhood has this authentic rhythm – there’s a tiny alimentari next door where this elderly woman sells the best prosciutto I’ve ever tasted, and around the corner there’s a wine bar where locals actually drink (not just tourists taking Instagram photos). Morning sounds are church bells and delivery trucks, not tour buses. You’ll probably walk past the same shopkeepers a few times, and by day three they’ll nod hello. That 9.2 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything works exactly as it should. The WiFi is solid, the air conditioning actually cools the room, and check-in was seamless even though I arrived during that weird afternoon siesta time. If you want to feel like you’re staying in Florence rather than just visiting it, this is your spot.

What could be improved: During the hottest part of day the a/c would have benefited from a floor fan to get the bedroom more comfortable.
What could be improved: Stairs were a bit of a challenge, very steep so may not suit an older couple, the only negative
