Cuprena
Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of places around Arezzo, and Cuprena honestly caught me off guard in the best way possible. It’s tucked away in Località Marcena – which, if you’re not familiar with the area, is this quiet residential pocket just outside the historic center where locals actually live. You know what I mean? That sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk into town but far enough out that you’re not dealing with tour groups under your window at 7 AM.
The thing about Cuprena is that it feels like someone actually thought about what travelers need, not just what looks good in photos. The rooms have this warm, lived-in elegance – sort of like staying at your cultured Italian aunt’s house if she happened to have impeccable taste and a serious budget for linens. I mean, the bathroom tiles alone probably cost more than my monthly rent, but they’ve managed to keep it from feeling stuffy or intimidating. There’s this gorgeous terrace where you can sit with your morning coffee and actually see the rolling Tuscan hills without craning your neck around some ugly modern building. And honestly? The breakfast spread is ridiculous – they’ve got local cheeses and prosciutto that probably came from farms you could walk to, plus they make this incredible jam from figs that grow right on the property.
What really sold me on the place was the staff’s approach – they’re not hovering, but they seem to genuinely know their stuff about the area. When I mentioned wanting to hit some of the smaller antique shops (Arezzo’s monthly antique fair is legendary, but the real finds are in the everyday places), the guy at the front desk didn’t just hand me a generic map. He actually walked me through which streets to try on which days, warned me about the one dealer who’s notorious for overcharging tourists, and even called ahead to make sure this tiny ceramics shop would be open. That’s the kind of local knowledge you just can’t fake. The whole experience felt effortless in a way that probably takes serious work behind the scenes – parking was handled without me even asking, check-in took about three minutes, and they somehow anticipated that I’d want extra towels before I realized I needed them. It’s definitely pricier than the standard business hotels closer to the train station, but you’re paying for something completely different here. If you want to feel like you’re actually experiencing Arezzo rather than just sleeping near it, this is your place.
