Agriturismo Merigge Wellness & Spa Montepulciano
You know what struck me first about Agriturismo Merigge? The drive up Via di Montenero is actually part of the experience – you’re winding through proper Tuscan countryside, and suddenly this restored farmhouse appears with the spa building tucked discretely behind it. I mean, you’re technically in Cervognano, but honestly, it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere (in the best possible way). The whole place has this zen-meets-rustic thing going on that somehow doesn’t feel forced.
The wellness center is where they really got it right. I’ve stayed at plenty of agriturismos that tack on a “spa” as an afterthought, but this place was clearly designed around the concept. The treatment rooms overlook the vineyards, and there’s this indoor pool area that catches the afternoon light perfectly. What I loved was how quiet it stays – even when they’re fully booked, you’re not dealing with crowded facilities or rushing to claim a lounger. The massage I had used local herbs, which sounds gimmicky but actually made sense given all the lavender and rosemary growing right outside. They’ve got this partnership with local producers, so everything from the oils to the honey treatments comes from within a few kilometers.
The rooms are solid – not Instagram-perfect, but comfortable in that authentic farmhouse way. Thick walls mean you actually sleep well, and the bathrooms are modern without being sterile. Parking is easy (always a relief in this part of Tuscany), and the staff genuinely knows the area. When I asked about hiking trails, they didn’t just hand me a generic map – they told me which paths have the best views of Montepulciano’s towers and where to stop for lunch along the way. The breakfast uses ingredients from their own garden and nearby farms, which you’d expect, but they execute it really well. That 9.5 rating makes sense when you consider it’s not trying to be a luxury resort – it’s doing exactly what it set out to do, and doing it thoughtfully. If you’re looking for a proper escape that still keeps you connected to the landscape and local culture, this is your spot.
