Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Castello Di Vicarello, I thought it might be one of those places that sounds amazing online but turns out to be all style and no substance. Boy, was I wrong. This place is tucked away in the hills near Sasso d’Ombrone, which honestly most people zip past on their way to more famous Tuscan destinations, but that’s exactly what makes it special. You’re getting the real Maremma experience here, not the tourist-packed version.

The castello itself is this beautifully restored medieval structure that doesn’t feel like a museum – I mean, you can actually imagine people living here centuries ago. The rooms have that perfect balance of historic character and modern comfort, though I should mention the Wi-Fi can be spotty in some of the tower rooms (comes with the territory when you’re dealing with stone walls that are probably three feet thick). What really got me was the attention to detail – they’ve got this incredible wine cellar where they do tastings, and the staff actually knows their stuff about the local Morellino di Scansano wines. You know what surprised me most? The silence. Once the sun goes down, all you hear are crickets and maybe the distant sound of wild boar rustling around in the olive groves.

The food situation is pretty fantastic too – they source most everything from their own estate or neighboring farms, so you’re getting ingredients that were literally picked that morning. The breakfast spread includes their own honey, olive oil, and cheese, plus this incredible bread that’s still warm when they bring it out. Parking is easy (thank god, because navigating those narrow country roads with a rental car is stressful enough), and they’re super helpful with directions to places like the thermal baths at Saturnia or the coast at Castiglione della Pescaia – both about a 45-minute drive but totally worth it. The staff has this relaxed, genuine warmth that you don’t always find at fancier places, and they seem to actually enjoy chatting about the area’s history and hidden gems. Sure, it’s not cheap, but when you’re sitting on their terrace at sunset with a glass of their estate wine, watching the light fade over the Tuscan hills, you sort of forget about the price tag. This is the kind of place where you’ll find yourself planning your next visit before you’ve even checked out.

The whole hotel was just a dream with the rustic charm of the castle against such a beautiful backdrop of the Tuscany hills. The stay was made all the more memorable with the extraordinary service from all the staff. Because it’s only a few suites and thus less hotel guests, everything was very personalised. We were well taken care of(and more!!) during the entire stay. They very kindly helped to change the tyre of the car (it was punctured on the way to the hotel); even cleaned the car’s service, and placed extra water bottles too in the car for our subsequent journeys. everyone was so friendly!! Restaurant was really beautiful with the transparent windows, and we had the pleasure of live music too for one of the dinners. Room was spacious and so pretty. I loved the marble floors of the bathroom. So perfect!

My stay at Castello di Vicarello exceeded expectations! The property is surrounded by a true idyllic Tuscan landscape. The interior brings the outside in, seamlessly, and it has so much character. The history and spirit of the castle was kept intact, but a modern twist incorporated, creating a beautiful luxurious experience. The staff: exceptional, always so kind, ready to help, and with such positive attitude. I’d easily return, and definitely recommend!

The place feels like a peaceful retreat from reality itself, where it is almost possible to disconnect from all the negativities of everyday life. One of the lovely things about the place is that it is not crowded, allowing you to enjoy the facilities with a certain level of privacy that is not common in most hotels. The staff is super helpful and friendly, especially Sufian and Franscesia who made our stay very unique. The owners are also very friendly and usually around, speaking with the guests and sharing tips about the place and Italy in general. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, but it boils down to what you make out of it, and whether you are willing to step away from the busy rhythm of life and possibly end up spending some time alone with your thoughts!
