Castello di Leonina Relais – Adults Only

You know what struck me first about Castello di Leonina? It’s not actually in Siena proper – it’s tucked away in the countryside about 15 minutes south of the city, which honestly ended up being perfect. I mean, you get all that Tuscan hillside magic without the crowds stumbling around outside your window at midnight.

The place feels like someone’s elegant country estate that just happens to rent rooms. The building itself is this gorgeous stone structure that’s been converted with real care – none of that sterile hotel feeling you sometimes get with castle conversions. My room had these thick walls that kept everything wonderfully cool even in July, and the silence at night was incredible after dealing with city noise for weeks. The adults-only policy really shows too; there’s this relaxed, sophisticated vibe where you can actually enjoy a glass of wine by the pool without worrying about someone cannon-balling next to you. Speaking of the pool, it’s not huge but it’s perfectly positioned with views over the rolling hills – I spent way too many afternoons there with a book.

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually know the area. When I asked about dinner recommendations, they didn’t just hand me a tourist brochure – they told me about this little osteria in Asciano that locals go to, and gave me specific directions through the back roads that avoided the main tourist route. The breakfast was another pleasant surprise; they source a lot from nearby farms and you can taste the difference. The pecorino cheese alone was worth getting up early for. The only minor thing I’d mention is that you definitely need a car here – there’s plenty of parking, but you’re not walking anywhere. That said, it makes for perfect day trips to Montalcino or Montepulciano, and coming back to this peaceful spot each evening felt like a real retreat. The whole experience just felt authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find – like staying with well-traveled friends who happen to live in a castle.
