Casa Gori
Certaldo, ItalyYou know what caught me off guard about Casa Gori? It’s actually this beautifully restored palazzo right on Viale Matteotti, and I mean right in the heart of Certaldo – not some generic business hotel you’d expect from the name. The moment you walk in, there’s this gorgeous marble staircase that honestly made me stop and take photos before I even checked in. The staff behind the reception desk were chatting in rapid Italian with what seemed like half the neighborhood dropping by, which I loved – it felt like staying at a place that’s genuinely woven into the fabric of the town rather than just plunked down for tourists.
The rooms are what you’d call elegant without being stuffy, if that makes sense. Mine had these high ceilings with original moldings and windows that opened onto the street below (there’s a bit of morning bustle around 7 AM when the shops open, but nothing too crazy). The bathroom was surprisingly spacious – I mean, Italian hotels can be hit or miss with bathroom size, but this one had a proper shower you could actually move around in. What really sold me was the attention to details: thick towels that didn’t feel like sandpaper, decent water pressure, and air conditioning that actually worked during those sweltering July afternoons. The Wi-Fi was solid throughout the building too, which honestly isn’t always a given in these older properties.
But here’s the thing about staying at Casa Gori – you’re literally a two-minute walk from the funicular that takes you up to Certaldo Alto, the medieval hilltop town that’s basically the whole reason anyone comes here. I watched so many tourists trudging up the hill with their day packs while I just strolled over after my morning espresso and rode up in comfort. The hotel’s location also puts you right near some genuinely good restaurants that aren’t tourist traps – there’s this little osteria about three doors down where I had the best wild boar ragu of my entire trip. Parking was surprisingly painless too; they’ve got a small lot behind the building, and the staff helped me navigate the whole ZTL situation (those restricted driving zones that can be a nightmare if you’re not prepared). The 8.2 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s a solid, well-run place that gets the fundamentals right and gives you a genuine taste of staying in a proper Italian town rather than some sanitized resort bubble.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: A few mosquitoes in room, fine once dealt with, some noise intrusion from entrance hall and road, but slept very well so not a huge problem.
What could be improved: Everything was a bit old but clean and funtional, no problem just to know what you get.
The bed was on the hard side but OK for me. The bathroom had a bidet as well as toilet, basin and shower. Water pressure and temperature were very good.
I noted central heating in the room as well as aircon so a winter visit would probably be comfortable.
The location was great for me as I travelled by train and Casa Gori is almost opposite the station. It has a few parking spaces and I was able to hire a car and use one of them for free.
What could be improved: Not really a dislike but breakfast was provided at any of several nearby cafes and consisted of a coffee and a pastry. This was fine for me, I used Cafe Jam next to the station, excellent. But if you expect breakfast at Casa Gori you will be disappointed.
What could be improved: Maybe if the owner spoke just a little English, but not really a problem
What could be improved: My room smelled like hairspray. If they used more natural cleaning products it would help.
Very clean, renewed, big room.
What could be improved: I wish I knew how to turn the AC on and that there was a screen on my window. I received a lot of mosquito bites.
There is a comfortable seating area outside in the shade.
Very conveniently situated very near the station with a great cafe in the same vicinity where we had breakfast.
What could be improved: There was no window which could be opened in our room. Other rooms do have windows which open.
What could be improved: Nothing
