Casa del Sarto
So I stumbled onto Casa del Sarto during my third trip to Florence, and honestly, I wish I’d found this place years ago. It’s tucked away on Via Santa Caterina D’Alessandria – you know, that quieter street that runs parallel to the chaos near Santa Croce but feels like a completely different world. The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense of… I don’t know, sophistication without the stuffiness? The lobby has these gorgeous original frescoed ceilings that make you crane your neck like a tourist (which, let’s face it, you probably are), but the staff treats you like you belong there.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to preserve all the palazzo’s 16th-century character while actually making it comfortable for modern travelers. The rooms have these thick stone walls that keep everything blissfully quiet – and trust me, after staying in places where you can hear every scooter roaring down Via dei Calzaiuoli at 2 AM, you’ll appreciate the silence. My room had this incredible view over the internal courtyard where they serve breakfast, and I spent way too much time just watching the morning light hit the terracotta rooftops. The bathroom was one of those marble affairs that feels almost too fancy to use, but the water pressure was perfect and the towels were ridiculously soft.
The location is actually genius if you think about it – you’re a five-minute walk from the Basilica di Santa Croce (I mean, you can practically see Michelangelo’s tomb from some of the upper floors), but you’re far enough from the tourist stampede that you can actually enjoy your morning cappuccino in peace. There’s this little alimentari right around the corner where the owner, Franco, makes the best panettone I’ve ever had – he’ll probably try to sell you some prosciutto too, and honestly, just go with it. The hotel concierge actually recommended it, which tells you something about how well they know their neighborhood. Oh, and if you’re planning to drive here, don’t – the streets are basically medieval obstacle courses, but the train station is super accessible and you can walk everywhere you’d want to go. The whole experience just feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find in Florence these days, especially at this price point.
