Cala Dei Mori

You know what struck me first about Cala Dei Mori? It’s actually got this understated elegance that you don’t expect from a 4-star place right on Via del Littorale. I mean, that street can get pretty busy with all the coastal traffic heading toward the port, but somehow the hotel sits back just enough that you’re not dealing with constant noise from trucks and Vespas. The building itself has this sort of weathered Mediterranean charm – not Instagram-perfect, but genuinely lived-in in the best way.

The location is honestly brilliant if you know Livorno at all. You’re literally a five-minute walk from some of the best seafood spots that locals actually eat at (not the tourist traps closer to the Fortezza Vecchia). There’s this little osteria down the street where the fishermen grab their morning coffee, and the hotel staff – who’ve clearly been there forever – will point you toward the good stuff if you ask. The rooms themselves are comfortable without being fancy, but here’s the thing: the sea-facing ones are absolutely worth the upgrade. I’m talking about waking up to actual Mediterranean views, not some sliver of blue between apartment buildings. The 8.6 rating makes sense once you’re there – everything works, the beds are solid, and the air conditioning actually keeps up with July heat.

What really sold me on this place was the breakfast situation. They set it up on this terrace that catches the morning light just right, and while it’s not some elaborate buffet, everything tastes fresh and local. The pastries come from a bakery somewhere in the neighborhood (you can tell because they’re gone by 9 AM), and the coffee is properly strong Italian coffee, not that watery hotel stuff. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – the street spots fill up fast, especially during summer when everyone’s heading to the beaches south of town. But honestly, once you’re settled in, you might not want to drive much anyway. The whole Livorno waterfront is walkable from here, and if you’re feeling ambitious, you can catch the ferry to Capraia right from the port area. It’s one of those places where you end up staying an extra day just because leaving feels like too much effort, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need from a hotel.
