Borgo Vescine
Radda in Chianti, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Tuscany, but Borgo Vescine hits different. It’s tucked away in this tiny hamlet called Vescine – honestly, you’ll probably miss the turnoff from the main road between Radda and Gaiole if you’re not paying attention. The whole property feels like someone’s wealthy Italian uncle decided to restore an entire medieval village just for kicks, and somehow you get to sleep there.
The thing about this place is that it actually feels lived-in, not like those sterile luxury hotels where you’re afraid to touch anything. I mean, yes, it’s definitely fancy – we’re talking 5-star fancy – but there’s this warmth to it that’s hard to fake. The stone buildings date back centuries, and you can tell they’ve been restored with serious attention to detail. My room had these massive wooden beams overhead and windows that looked out over vineyards that seemed to roll on forever. The bathroom was modern (thank god), but they managed to blend it seamlessly with the old architecture. Pro tip: if you’re driving up, the parking situation is actually pretty straightforward – there’s a small lot right by the main building, though it fills up during peak season.
What really got me was how quiet it gets at night. Like, properly quiet – no traffic, no city noise, just the occasional sound of wind through the cypress trees. During the day, you’re a quick drive from Radda’s main square (maybe 10 minutes), and honestly, the staff knows all the local wine producers personally. They’ll point you toward the smaller vineyards that tourists don’t usually find – places where you can actually talk to the winemaker instead of just doing a standard tasting. The pool area is perfect for afternoons when you’ve had enough wine touring; it’s got this view that makes you understand why people move to Tuscany and never leave. The restaurant… well, let’s just say I had the best wild boar ragu of my life there, and I’m not even exaggerating. They source everything locally, and you can taste the difference.
Look, it’s not cheap – this is definitely a splurge kind of place. But if you’re going to do Chianti properly, this is how you do it. The 9.2 rating isn’t just because it’s pretty (though it absolutely is); it’s because they’ve figured out how to make luxury feel effortless. Check-in was smooth, the staff remembers your name, and there’s this sense that you’re experiencing the real Tuscany, not some sanitized version of it. Just book early if you’re planning to visit during harvest season – September and October fill up fast, and for good reason.

The town square dinner was superb and Lorenzo is our favourite bar man in Italy.
The flowers and gardens are divine & breakfast of fresh produce was very yummy.
To top it off, he even gifted us a bottle of wine at checkout. We were truly touched by the thoughtful welcome and parting gestures. It was a wonderful experience, and we highly recommend this place!
