Borgo San Luigi
You know what hits you first at Borgo San Luigi? The smell of lavender and that particular Tuscan herb mix that somehow makes everything feel instantly calming. I mean, you’re driving down Strada delle Cerreta – which is basically this narrow country road that winds through olive groves – and suddenly there’s this gorgeous stone villa that looks like it’s been there forever. It actually has, turns out the place dates back centuries, though they’ve done this incredible job of updating it without losing any of that authentic charm.
The whole property sits on this hillside just outside Monteriggioni’s medieval walls, and honestly, the location couldn’t be more perfect. You’re close enough to walk into the old town (it’s maybe ten minutes uphill), but far enough away that you don’t get the tourist crowds wandering around your breakfast terrace. Speaking of which – the breakfast setup is something else. They do this whole spread on the terrace overlooking the valley, and if you time it right around 8 AM, you’ll catch the morning light hitting those cypress trees just so. The coffee’s proper Italian strong, not that watered-down hotel stuff, and they make fresh pastries that are… well, let’s just say I had three cornetti and zero regrets.
What really sets this place apart though is how they’ve managed to feel both luxurious and genuinely welcoming. The rooms are spacious – I stayed in one of the suites with the exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings, and the bathroom had this rainfall shower that I’m honestly still thinking about. The beds are incredibly comfortable, which matters when you’ve spent the day hiking around San Gimignano or exploring Siena (both totally doable day trips from here). There’s a pool area that’s beautifully designed with these infinity views over the countryside, though it can get a bit busy in the afternoons during peak season. The staff really knows their stuff too – they gave me restaurant recommendations in nearby Colle di Val d’Elsa that I never would have found otherwise, plus they arranged a wine tasting at a local vineyard that was absolutely worth it. Parking’s easy and free, which is a blessing in this part of Italy, and they have this lovely garden area where you can just sit with a glass of wine and watch the sunset paint the hills gold. The whole experience feels like staying at a sophisticated friend’s country house – if your friend happened to have impeccable taste and a staff to take care of everything.
