Borgo Antico Casalbosco Holiday Home & Winery
Pistoia, ItalyYou know what’s funny about Borgo Antico Casalbosco? I almost drove right past it the first time — it’s tucked away on Via Montalese in this tiny frazione called Santomato, and honestly, if you’re not looking for it specifically, you’d miss the understated entrance completely. But that’s actually part of its charm. This isn’t some flashy resort trying to grab your attention from the autostrada; it’s a working winery that happens to have some really thoughtful accommodations attached.
The moment you pull into their gravel courtyard (parking’s never an issue, by the way), you’re hit with this incredible smell of fermenting grapes mixed with that distinct Tuscan cypress scent. The buildings are proper old stone — not that fake rustic stuff you see everywhere — and the whole place has this lived-in feeling that makes you want to pour a glass of wine and just… stay awhile. Which, I mean, is exactly what you should do because their Sangiovese is surprisingly good for a small producer. The family that runs it actually lives on the property, so you’ll probably meet them during your stay. They’re the kind of people who remember your name and ask about your plans for the day without being pushy about it.
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to keep that authentic agriturismo vibe while still getting the details right. The rooms are comfortable without being fancy — think restored farmhouse with modern bathrooms and proper air conditioning (trust me, you’ll want that in July). The breakfast spreads include their own olive oil and honey, plus this incredible bread from the bakery in nearby Pieve a Nievole. Speaking of nearby, you’re actually in a perfect spot here — Pistoia’s just a quick drive when you want proper restaurants and some culture, but you’re far enough out that nights are properly quiet. No traffic noise, just crickets and the occasional owl. I’ve stayed during harvest season in September, and honestly, waking up to the sound of grape picking is something you don’t forget. The only minor thing is that dinner isn’t served on-site, but there’s a fantastic family-run trattoria about ten minutes away in Serravalle — ask them for directions, they’ll know exactly where I mean. This isn’t a place for people who want poolside service and daily housekeeping, but if you’re looking for that authentic Tuscan experience without the tourist crowds of Chianti Classico, Borgo Antico Casalbosco really delivers.

We actually got engaged in the property garden -a beautiful location for it! The lady at the reception helped book a lovely dinner for us to celebrate close by and made the stay extra special. We also enjoyed a wine tasting in the winery. Can’t wait to come back again to visit!
