Borgo Al Cerro

You know what struck me first about Borgo Al Cerro? The silence. I mean, you’re out there in the Tuscan countryside near Casole d’Elsa, and it’s just… quiet in the best possible way. The hotel sits on this hillside location that honestly makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into someone’s private estate – which, in a way, you kind of have.

The property itself is beautifully restored, with that authentic Tuscan stone architecture that doesn’t feel fake or overdone. When I checked in, the staff actually remembered my name from our email exchange weeks earlier, which was a nice touch. The rooms have this perfect balance of rustic charm and modern comfort – thick stone walls that keep things cool during those brutal summer afternoons, but you’ve still got proper air conditioning and WiFi that actually works (something I’ve learned not to take for granted in rural Italy). The beds are seriously comfortable, and I loved the little details like the locally-sourced toiletries and the way they leave your shutters slightly open so you wake up to that golden Tuscan light filtering in.

What really sets this place apart though is the location – you’re maybe fifteen minutes from Casole d’Elsa proper, which gives you access to those little family-run trattorias and the weekly market, but you’re far enough out that you feel completely disconnected from everything. The pool area is where I spent most of my mornings, and honestly, the view from there across the Val d’Elsa is worth the trip alone. They serve breakfast poolside if you want, and their coffee is actually proper Italian coffee, not the watered-down stuff you sometimes get at hotels trying to cater to international tastes. The evening aperitivo situation is pretty special too – they set up this little bar area on the terrace around sunset, and the owner (or maybe it was the manager?) would come around chatting with guests about the best vineyards to visit nearby. Speaking of which, if you’re into wine, you’re in serious luck here. Chianti Classico territory is right on your doorstep, and the hotel can arrange tastings that feel authentic rather than touristy.

The restaurant on-site is solid – not groundbreaking, but they source ingredients locally and the pasta is handmade. I’d still recommend venturing out for dinner at least once or twice though, maybe to that little place in Mensano that the front desk recommended. Fair warning about getting there: the final stretch of road to reach the hotel is pretty narrow and winding, so if you’re not comfortable with Italian country roads, maybe don’t attempt it after dark on your first night. Parking is no problem once you arrive though. The whole experience feels like staying at a friend’s very well-appointed country house, assuming your friend has impeccable taste and a serious appreciation for the finer things in life.
