BnB Paolina
Siena, ItalyYou know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to BnB Paolina on Via delle Cerchia – I mean, it’s tucked away on this narrow street that you’d probably miss if you weren’t looking for it. But honestly, that’s exactly what makes this place special. It’s like finding a secret that the locals have been keeping to themselves, just a few minutes’ walk from the main drag but worlds away from the tourist chaos around the Duomo.
The whole place has this authentic Sienese feel that’s getting harder and harder to find these days. Paolina (yeah, the owner’s actually named Paolina) has managed to keep everything feeling genuinely local without sacrificing comfort – and trust me, after walking those medieval cobblestones all day, you’ll appreciate the thoughtful touches she’s added. The rooms are what I’d call “perfectly Tuscan” – exposed beams, terracotta floors, but with modern bathrooms that actually have decent water pressure. The breakfast situation is particularly good – she sources everything locally, and I swear the pecorino cheese came from somewhere just outside the city walls. You’ll want to get down early though, because the little courtyard where they serve it fills up fast, especially during spring when everyone’s trying to catch that perfect morning light.
What really sets this place apart is how Paolina seems to know every corner of Siena worth knowing about. She’ll casually mention that the best gelato is actually down this tiny alley near San Domenico (not the touristy spots on Via di Città), or that if you want to avoid the crowds at the Palazzo Pubblico, go right when they open at 10am. The location itself is pretty brilliant – you’re close enough to walk to everything that matters, but far enough from the main pedestrian areas that you won’t hear groups of tourists chatting outside your window at midnight. Parking can be a bit tricky (it’s Siena, after all), but there’s a decent lot about five minutes away, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need your car anyway. The whole centro storico becomes your backyard, and with a 9.3 rating, you can tell other travelers have figured out what makes this place work. It’s not fancy in that over-the-top hotel way, but it’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to actually experience Siena rather than just check it off a list.
