Aria di Collina – Isola d’Elba
Porto Azzurro, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Aria di Collina? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there – it literally means “hill breeze” and honestly, that’s exactly what you get. Perched up in the Monte area above Porto Azzurro, this place catches these amazing cross-breezes that make even the hottest August afternoons bearable. I mean, air conditioning is nice and all, but there’s something about that natural cooling that just hits different when you’re on Elba.
The location is sort of genius, actually. Most tourists cluster down by the harbor in Porto Azzurro proper, but being up on LOC MONTE puts you maybe a ten-minute walk from all the action while keeping you above the summer crowds and – let’s be honest – the occasional waft from the fishing boats. The walk down to town is easy enough, though coming back up after a long dinner and maybe one too many glasses of Aleatico… well, that’s character building. What I love is how you can actually see the mainland on clear days, and the way the morning light hits the water from up here is just ridiculous. The hotel itself has that relaxed Tuscan archipelago vibe without trying too hard – you know how some places feel like they’re performing “authentic Italian charm” for you? This isn’t that.
The 9.3 rating honestly doesn’t surprise me at all. The staff seem to actually live on the island (not always a given at resort hotels), so they know things like which beaches are less crowded on weekends or where to get the best focaccia col formaggio – there’s this little place down near the port that they pointed me toward. Rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star, but it’s the details that matter here. Good water pressure, which is sometimes hit-or-miss on the islands, and the windows actually open wide enough to let that hill breeze do its work. The pool area gets busy around 2 PM when people retreat from the beach, but early morning or late afternoon it’s perfect for that post-hike cooldown. Speaking of which, if you’re into hiking, the trails up toward the old fortress ruins start basically from the hotel’s backyard – the concierge can point you in the right direction, though fair warning, it’s a proper climb in summer heat. One small thing – parking can get tight during peak season, so if you’re driving over from Piombino, maybe call ahead about that. But really, once you’re settled in and feeling that breeze with a glass of something local, watching the ferries come and go below, you’ll get why people come back here year after year.

Situated with complete privacy for all accommodations.
The scents of wild herbs, ( rosemary, sage, wild fennel, oregano, ) the location and spectacular view within the outdoor sauna, the winds, the owls at night. During the day or evening, all moments brought its own endearing values. We were lucky to witness the small periods of fireflies.
We are Dutch, living in Italy. The hosts gave immediately comfort and the feeling we were welcome and truly guests. What we appreciated were the utensils and primary commodities. From olive oil to coffee tea sugar etc. The beds slept fantastic. The apartment was bright, clean and foreseen with all as it was a little house.
You need to accept that the bumpy road of maybe 5 - 8 minutes, is a small investment for a breathtaking unique place.
Its rare that hosts (owners) really make you feel the place they worked hard for, is considered yours for the moment you occupy it.
What could be improved: Only envy
A great place to enjoy Elba. If you try it, you will come back
The location is incredibly peaceful – it’s a true retreat away from the noise of daily life, allowing for deep relaxation surrounded by Elba’s natural beauty. Waking up to such tranquility was a highlight of our stay. Additionally, the hosts were exceptional – they were available for any questions, offering assistance whenever needed, while giving me complete privacy to enjoy the property.
This was such a memorable experience that we already plan to return. I highly recommend Aria di Collina to anyone visiting Elba. It’s an absolute gem!
What could be improved: There was nothing to complain about! Pity, that we had to leave and that we ‚lost’ one day because our old car didn't cope well with the Italian roads and we ended up in workshop.
The apartment came with a smart speaker and a TV with Netflix for guests to use which was so cleverly formatted for each group of guests (English adults, English kids, German kids etc).
The view is breathtaking, and while we sat outside we witnessed a large group of wild boars moving down the hill right next to the terrace which was like being on safari. The house is located within the nature reserve so for nature lovers (like us) this was ideal.
Our 7yo son fell in love with Nero the cat and Rosa the little corgi which made the experience even more magical for him.
The properties are run by the loveliest couple, who were happy to give us some information on the area and tell us some funny anecdotes of their experiences in Elba. They even tried to help us to find accommodation for the following nights as this property was sadly fully booked.
What could be improved: There was nothing we did not like. Perhaps only that we had to leave :)
What could be improved: There was no breakfast but we weren’t expecting one. The road to the property was challenging and not for the faint of heart. But worth it once you got there.
What could be improved: The sofa bed worked very well for our 3 year old daughter, however the mattress might be too thin for an adult to sleep comfortably on during several nights.
What could be improved: We loved all… unfortunately each holiday comes to an end and we had to leave.
