Appartamento La Terrazza
Lucca, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Appartamento La Terrazza? The fact that it’s right on Corso Garibaldi – and I mean, if you’ve spent any time in Lucca, you know that’s basically the main artery that cuts through the old town. But here’s the thing that surprised me: despite being on such a central street, it’s actually pretty quiet inside. The walls are thick (thank God for those old Italian buildings), and the terrace – which is obviously the star of the show here – faces away from the street traffic.
The apartment itself feels more like staying at a well-traveled friend’s place than a typical hotel. There’s this lived-in elegance that you don’t get in those sterile chain places. The terrace is honestly what sells it though – I spent way too many mornings out there with my coffee, looking out over the rooftops toward the Duomo di San Martino. You can actually see the campanile from certain angles, which the host mentioned casually during check-in like it was no big deal. The setup is perfect for that whole Italian aperitivo thing too; I mean, you’re a two-minute walk from the good wine shops on Via Fillungo, and there’s something magical about watching the light change over those terracotta roofs with a glass of Chianti in hand.
What really impressed me was how the owner – this super knowledgeable local guy – actually knows the neighborhood. He pointed out this tiny osteria called Da Giulio that I never would have found otherwise (it’s tucked away near Piazza del Carmine, looks like nothing from the outside but serves the best tortelli in town). The apartment’s location means you’re walking distance to everything that matters – the walls for your morning run, Sant’Andrea for the evening crowds, and that amazing little gelateria on Via Santa Lucia that somehow all the locals know about. Parking can be a bit tricky since you’re in the ZTL zone, but honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t want to drive anywhere anyway. The whole historic center is maybe fifteen minutes wall-to-wall on foot. I stayed there in late September, which felt perfect – warm enough for the terrace but not so crowded that you’re fighting tourists for every decent restaurant table. The 9.8 rating makes total sense when you experience it; it’s that rare place that actually delivers on the promise of feeling like a local, even if you’re just passing through.
