Appartamento in Villa con Piscina – Mhateria Relais
You know what caught me off guard about Mhateria Relais? It’s actually tucked away in this gorgeous villa setting in La Villa – which honestly sounds fancy but it’s just this peaceful little locality outside Rignano sull’Arno. I mean, when you’re driving up the winding road through the Tuscan hills (about 20 minutes from Florence if you’re wondering), you sort of expect another cookie-cutter hotel. But this place… well, it’s more like staying at your sophisticated Italian friend’s family estate.
The apartment-style setup is brilliant – you get your own space but with hotel-level service, which is honestly the best of both worlds. The pool is probably what you’ll remember most though. It’s not massive, but it’s perfectly positioned with these incredible valley views, and in the early morning when the mist is still hanging over the olive groves, it’s pretty magical. The water’s heated too, which matters more than you’d think in spring and fall. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays – even in summer, it never felt crowded or chaotic like some places can get. The villa itself has this authentic Tuscan character (thick stone walls, terracotta floors, that sort of thing) without feeling stuffy or overdone. Your apartment comes with a proper kitchen if you want to grab ingredients from the Saturday market in Rignano – actually, do that, the local produce is incredible and way cheaper than eating out every meal.
The staff here actually knows the area inside and out, which made such a difference. They pointed us toward this tiny osteria in nearby Incisa that we never would’ve found otherwise, and gave us the real scoop on which wineries are worth visiting versus the tourist traps. Parking is easy – you just pull right up to the villa, no stress about finding a spot or dealing with ZTL zones like in Florence. The 9.7 rating honestly makes sense when you experience it. It’s not perfect – the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, and if you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll need to drive somewhere else. But if you want that authentic Tuscan experience without the crowds, where you can actually relax and feel like you’re living there for a few days rather than just passing through, this is exactly what you’re looking for. Plus, being 4-star means you get the comfort level without the pretentiousness of some 5-star places that take themselves too seriously.
