Antico Centro Suite
You know what struck me first about Antico Centro Suite? The moment you walk through that heavy wooden door on Via De’ Brunelleschi, you’re hit with this immediate sense of… well, actually being in Florence. I mean, sure, you’re literally in Florence, but this place doesn’t feel like some generic hotel that could be anywhere. The lobby has these gorgeous exposed beams and stone details that remind you you’re staying in a building with serious history.
The location is honestly pretty perfect if you want to feel like a local without sacrificing convenience. Via De’ Brunelleschi is tucked into Santa Maria Novella in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk to the Duomo (maybe 8-10 minutes if you don’t get distracted by shop windows), but far enough from the main tourist drag that you’re not dealing with crowds of people following umbrella-wielding tour guides at 7 AM. The train station is super close too – I could literally hear the trains at night, but it wasn’t bothersome, more like urban white noise. What I really loved was being able to grab morning coffee at this little bar around the corner where the barista actually remembered my order after two days. Try doing that near Ponte Vecchio.
The suites themselves have this comfortable, lived-in elegance that feels authentically Italian rather than trying too hard. My room had these beautiful tile floors that stayed cool even during a particularly warm September, and the bathroom – honestly, the shower pressure was better than my apartment back home. The air conditioning actually worked (not always a given in historic buildings), though the thick walls kept things pretty comfortable anyway. I will say the WiFi was solid throughout, which matters when you’re trying to upload all those sunset photos from Piazzale Michelangelo. The staff was genuinely helpful too, not just polite – they gave me directions to this amazing little osteria in Oltrarno that definitely wasn’t in any guidebook. One thing to note: if you’re someone who needs everything to be shiny and new, this might not be your vibe. The charm is in the character details, the slightly creaky floorboards, the way morning light filters through those traditional shutters. It’s Florence, not a business hotel in downtown anywhere. But honestly, that’s exactly why you’d want to stay here – it feels like you’re living in the city, not just visiting it.
