Antico Casale L’impostino
You know those hotels where you pull up and immediately think “okay, this is going to be good”? That’s exactly what happened when I first drove down the winding road to Antico Casale L’impostino. It’s tucked away in this tiny frazione called Casal Di Pari – honestly, if you blink while driving through Civitella Marittima, you’ll miss the turnoff entirely. But that’s kind of the point. This place feels like stumbling onto a secret that locals have been keeping to themselves.
The building itself is this gorgeous restored farmhouse that actually looks like it belongs in the Tuscan countryside, not like someone just slapped some fake rustic elements together and called it authentic. When you walk in, there’s this incredible smell – sort of a mix of old wood, lavender, and something I couldn’t quite place (maybe rosemary from the garden?). The floors creak in that satisfying way that tells you this place has real history, and the rooms have these thick stone walls that keep everything blissfully cool even in August. I mean, the air conditioning works fine, but you barely need it. The beds are seriously comfortable too – none of that too-soft or too-firm nonsense you sometimes get at boutique places.
What really sets this place apart though is how the staff treats you like you’re staying with distant relatives rather than just another booking number. They’ll point you toward the best hiking trails in the area (there’s this incredible path that leads to an old watchtower about twenty minutes away), and they actually know which restaurants in town are worth your time versus the tourist traps. Pro tip: ask them about the little osteria down in the valley – it’s not on any travel websites, but the locals go there for Sunday lunch. The breakfast is another highlight – fresh pastries, local honey, and coffee that’s strong enough to wake the dead. They serve it on this terrace overlooking the hills, and honestly, it’s hard to motivate yourself to leave and go sightseeing.
The location is perfect if you want to explore this part of Tuscany without dealing with the Chianti crowds. You’re maybe forty minutes from Siena, but it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere in the best possible way. The only sounds at night are crickets and the occasional owl – no traffic, no city noise, just pure quiet. Parking is easy (there’s a little gravel area right by the entrance), and check-in was smooth even though we arrived pretty late. The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s one of those places where every detail feels intentional and cared for, from the locally-made soaps in the bathroom to the way they arrange fresh flowers in the common areas. If you’re looking for something genuinely special in southern Tuscany, this is it.

The pear & anise compote produced on site is lovely.
and Bagni di Petriolo which I recommend. Fantastic food and wine, their steak is to die for. My wife had a massage and was very happy with it.
