Agriturismo Macciangrosso Casale Piccolomini
Chiusi, ItalyYou know what hits you first when you pull up to Agriturismo Macciangrosso? It’s not just another farmhouse conversion – this place actually feels like someone’s beloved family estate that they’ve opened up to guests. The Casale Piccolomini sits on this sprawling property in Macciangrosso, and honestly, the setting is pretty spectacular. We’re talking rolling Tuscan hills, olive groves that seem to stretch forever, and that particular golden light that makes you understand why everyone goes crazy for this region.
The drive getting here is… well, it’s properly rural. You’ll wind through narrow roads past actual working farms (not the Instagram version), and GPS might get a bit confused in the final stretch – but that’s part of the charm, I suppose. Once you arrive though, the welcome is genuinely warm. The family running this place clearly takes pride in it, and you can tell they’ve put real thought into the details. The rooms blend traditional Tuscan architecture with modern comfort in a way that doesn’t feel forced or overly designed. Stone walls, wooden beams, proper beds – and thank god, excellent Wi-Fi and air conditioning that actually works during those sweltering July afternoons.
What really sets Macciangrosso apart is how it strikes this perfect balance between authentic agriturismo experience and genuine hospitality. The breakfast features ingredients from their own land – and I mean, you can literally see the olive trees your oil came from through the dining room windows. The pool area is beautifully positioned with views over the valley, and it’s usually peaceful even during peak season since they don’t pack too many guests in. Chiusi itself is just a short drive away, which is convenient because while the property is stunning, you’ll probably want to explore the local restaurants and that incredible Etruscan museum in town. The location also works brilliantly as a base for day trips – Montepulciano is maybe thirty minutes, and you can easily reach Pienza or even Siena without feeling like you’re spending your whole vacation in the car. Parking is never an issue here, obviously, and the staff genuinely seems to enjoy helping guests plan their explorations of the area. It’s the kind of place where you might arrive planning to stay two nights and end up extending your visit because leaving feels premature.

Guest Reviews
We enjoyed exploring all of the sitting areas and relaxation spaces, and especially loved eating al fresco together on the stunning terrace (overlooking a beautiful valley and the nearby town) in the evenings. Other areas of Tuscany were a good drivable distance for day trips (then back to the pool!) Clear out your phone memory - you’ll need space for all the photos you’ll take here!
What could be improved: Honestly, my one regret is that we didn’t stay much longer… we could have easily stayed a full week, and three days here would be the absolute minimum I’d suggest. It’s just too nice to leave!
What could be improved: You need a bar/restaurant on site
What could be improved: The only thing that wasn’t perfect was the slow wi fi.
What could be improved: No bar
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: There wasn't anyone around in the reception area to ask for guides or recommendations or anything else. It would have been nice for there to be a little more interaction and help. Also, you definitely need a car as there isn't anything close by to walk to and no food or wine available on site except for breakfast which you had to say you wanted two days before.
What could be improved: We stayed in a two bedroom apartment with external access. We arrived 10 minutes early and were met by the very nice and kind property caretaker who looks after the building and gardens. He did not speak very much English and we did not speak much Italian, but he was able to show us around and to our apartment. Other than that and a WhatsApp message we had no contact with anyone else and saw no one else until we left a week later. We literally had the whole place to ourselves and it was a bit too quiet for us - almost spooky! Our apartment was adequate and had the essentials and was very clean, but it was too small and cramped for us - thank goodness we had a second bedroom for our luggage as the other rooms were very small. Not really right for us and at the level of space and comfort we wanted. I cannot comment on the rooms in the main house as we did not go in beyond the reception area. There used to be no servicing of the apartments and there is a final cleaning and linen change fee that was not clearly apparent at the time of booking with booking.com and made for an awkward check out.
