Agriturismo I Bonsi
Reggello, ItalyYou know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I turned off the main road toward Reggello – honestly, I was just looking for a decent place to crash between Florence and the Chianti hills. But pulling up the gravel drive to Agriturismo I Bonsi, with those perfectly imperfect stone buildings scattered across the hillside, I immediately knew this was going to be different. The owners, this lovely Italian family, actually came out to greet me (no sterile lobby check-in here), and within minutes I was holding a glass of their own olive oil to taste. I mean, when’s the last time that happened at a hotel?
The thing about staying at an actual working farm is that you’re not just getting a room – you’re getting dropped into this whole other rhythm of life. My room was in what used to be part of the original farmhouse, and honestly, the thick stone walls kept it cool even during those sweltering August afternoons when Florence was basically melting. The bed was one of those firm Italian mattresses that somehow works perfectly after a day of walking around medieval towns, and the bathroom had this amazing rainfall shower that I definitely didn’t want to leave. But here’s what really got me: stepping out onto my little terrace at sunrise with an espresso, watching the mist roll off the Valdarno valley below while the roosters were doing their thing. It’s sort of magical in that understated Tuscan way, you know?
What makes this place special isn’t just the setting though – it’s how the family runs it. They’re not trying to be fancy or put on some show; they’re just genuinely proud of what they’ve built here. The dinner they serve (you have to book it, but seriously, do it) features vegetables from their garden and meat from local farms they’ve worked with for decades. The wine list is small but every bottle tells a story about some neighboring vineyard. And when I asked about hiking trails, the son literally drew me a hand-sketched map to this hidden waterfall about thirty minutes up the hill – the kind of spot you’d never find on Google Maps. The pool area gets busy with families around 4 PM, but mornings and evenings it’s basically yours, with those incredible views stretching all the way to the Pratomagno mountains. Fair warning though: if you’re looking for room service and a concierge desk, this isn’t your place. But if you want to experience what agriturismo actually means – staying with people who’ve worked this land for generations and will treat you like family – then I can’t think of anywhere better.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Everything was perfectly!
A beautiful and peaceful place where you can truly relax in nature.
The staff are friendly and responsive.
A warm and generous breakfast makes the experience even more pleasant.
What could be improved: Nothing
Early morning walks at sunrise and laying out on the warm grass with a picnic were amazing. Kenny (the dog), the cats and the roaming peacocks are great company and the team are all so lovely and helpful. The breakfast is abundant and fresh, and the accomodation had everything we needed.
Highly recommend staying and reserving a day to just enjoy the castle and area surrounding it. The home grown honey and wine are must-trys from Giacomo's little selection in the reception.
What could be improved: It's indeed somewhat remote but if you have a rental car, it's not an issue. And you can still find some decent restaurants nearby!
