When you pull up that winding road to Località Biaia (honestly, GPS gets a bit confused here, but just follow the signs after Camporgiano), you’re immediately in this different world where the Apuan Alps create this dramatic backdrop that makes you forget you’re only about an hour from the coast.

The rooms – well, they’ve got that rustic charm without making you feel like you’re roughing it. I mean, we’re talking proper 4-star comfort, but with exposed beams and local stone that actually means something here. The family running the place, they’re incredibly welcoming in that genuine Tuscan way where they’ll chat your ear off about the best hiking trails if you let them. Speaking of which, the location is perfect if you want to explore Garfagnana – you’re right in the heart of it, but tucked away enough that you hear church bells and roosters instead of traffic. The breakfast spread is honestly fantastic, with local honey, fresh ricotta, and homemade jams that’ll spoil you for hotel continental breakfast forever.

What really sets this place apart though is how it connects you to the area without trying too hard. There’s this organic garden where they grow vegetables for dinner, and you can actually walk through it – not just look at it through windows. The restaurant uses ingredients from local farms, and I’m not talking about that generic “farm-to-table” marketing speak. You can literally see where some of your food comes from. The hiking trails start practically from your door, and if you’re into that sort of thing, the owners know every path in the region. Fair warning though – if you’re looking for nightlife or shopping, you’ll need to venture further afield. But honestly, after a day exploring medieval villages like Castiglione di Garfagnana or hiking in the Orecchiella Park, you’ll be perfectly content sitting on the terrace with a glass of local wine, watching the light change on the mountains. It’s that kind of place where you actually unwind, not just check boxes on a tourist itinerary.

  Great spot if you plan a hike to the mountains. The stuff were sweet and helped us with tips. We booked a Civetta 2 apartment, which has a balcony with amazing view on the mountains. All the facilities were good and we enjoyed the swimming pool.
