Villasanpaolo Resort & Spa
San Gimignano, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Villasanpaolo? It’s actually tucked away on that winding road toward Certaldo – not right in San Gimignano’s medieval center where all the day-trippers cluster around those famous towers. And honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. You get this perfect balance where you’re close enough to walk into town (maybe 15 minutes through some gorgeous Tuscan countryside), but far enough out that you’re not dealing with tour bus noise at 7 AM.
The resort itself has this relaxed, almost residential feel – I mean, it’s definitely upscale, but not in that stuffy way some 4-star places can get. The spa is legitimately good (I’m usually skeptical of hotel spas, but this one actually knows what it’s doing), and the pool area… well, let’s just say you’ll understand why people end up spending entire afternoons there instead of sightseeing. The rooms are solid – nothing revolutionary, but comfortable beds, decent air conditioning (crucial in summer), and those little touches that show someone’s paying attention. Parking is straightforward, which anyone who’s driven in Tuscany will appreciate.
What really won me over, though, was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area. Not just the obvious stuff like restaurant recommendations, but actual insider knowledge – like which hiking trails are worth it, or that the best time to visit San Gimignano’s towers is right when they open before the crowds hit. The location gives you options too: Certaldo is literally down the road if you want something more authentic and less touristy, and you’re well-positioned for day trips to Siena or even Florence if you’re feeling ambitious. The 8.6 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s the kind of place where everything just works, you know? Good base for exploring without the chaos of staying right in the historical center.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Nothing really…
What could be improved: That there wasn’t a slot for kids in the pool in the afternoon as well
What could be improved: Decor in the bedrooms and bathrooms could use an update. Was mismatched and a bit dated
What could be improved: Parking was very crowded during the holiday; cars were very closely parked to each other ; would be better if closest areas were enlarged
What could be improved: We had a bad storm one night where we lost power and hot water but by the next afternoon all was restored.
Chef prepared my Gluten Free Dinner Wow
Garden Suite was fabulous
Spa area was relaxing
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: There was not enough food options for vegetarians
The hotel is surrounded by an outstanding vista of the Tuscan countryside. Incredibly peaceful.
The room we had was spacious with a lovely jacuzzi bath. The outside pool had sun loungers and plenty of shade on a sunny day.
There was a comprehensive range of food for breakfast which was enjoyed in a cool dining room with stunning views. We enjoyed half board. The food was superb and the staff ensured we were able to eat earlier due to fit in with the baby's bedtime.
The hotel was one of the best I have stayed in and cannot recommend it highly enough.
What could be improved: Nothing. Our stay was perfect
