Villa Il Paradisino
Sesto Fiorentino, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Villa Il Paradisino? The name actually fits – and that’s rare for Italian hotels that promise paradise. I mean, it’s not some sprawling resort, but there’s something genuinely peaceful about this place that hits you the moment you walk through those heavy wooden doors. The villa sits on Via di Colonnata, which honestly sounds more intimidating than it is – it’s actually this quiet residential street in Sesto Fiorentino where you can hear birds in the morning instead of traffic. The building itself has that weathered Tuscan charm where the stones look like they’ve been soaking up sun for centuries, and the gardens… well, they’re not perfectly manicured, but that’s exactly why they work. There’s jasmine climbing the walls that smells incredible in the evenings, and these old olive trees that provide just enough shade for the outdoor seating areas.
What really sets this place apart is how it feels more like staying at a well-connected friend’s family villa than a hotel. The staff actually remembers your name (I’m talking about the housekeeping team, not just the front desk), and they’ll tell you things like which bus to take to avoid the tourist crowds in Florence – because yes, you’re about 20 minutes from the city center, but that’s honestly perfect. You get easy access to Florence without the noise and chaos of staying right in the historic center. The rooms have this lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake – original terracotta floors that are slightly uneven in the best way, and bathrooms with those deep soaking tubs that Europeans do better than anyone else. The Wi-Fi is solid (I worked from there for three days), and the beds are firm in that European style that I actually prefer now. One small thing – the elevator is one of those tiny old-fashioned ones, so if you’re traveling with massive suitcases, just know you might be taking the stairs.
The breakfast situation deserves its own mention because it’s where you really see the attention to detail. They source pastries from a local bakery on Via Gramsci (the cornetti are ridiculous), and the coffee is strong enough to wake the dead – which you’ll need if you’re planning to tackle the Uffizi that day. The dining room overlooks the garden, and there’s this corner table by the window where you can watch the neighborhood cats have their morning meetings. Honestly, with a 9.4 rating, I was expecting to find some catch, but the only real downside is that it’s almost too relaxing – I ended up staying an extra night just because leaving felt wrong. If you’re the type who needs to be in the thick of everything, this might feel too removed, but if you want to experience Florence like someone who actually lives in the area rather than just passing through, Villa Il Paradisino gets it exactly right.

What could be improved: There was nothing not to like. The villa was traditionally decorated and the main bedroom had an amazing roof. Beautiful views from the windows.
