I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Villa Di Malpasso on Via di Ramini – honestly, the street’s pretty quiet and you might even miss the entrance if you’re not paying attention. But man, once you step inside, it’s like discovering this hidden gem that somehow escaped the tourist radar. The place has this authentic Tuscan villa feel without being overly precious about it, if that makes sense. I mean, sure, it’s got the traditional stone work and those gorgeous arched doorways, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about how they’ve kept things. The lobby smells faintly of lavender and old wood – not in a musty way, more like your Italian grandmother’s house if she happened to have impeccable taste.

What really got me was how the staff actually seemed to know Pistoia inside and out. When I mentioned wanting to avoid the usual tourist spots, the guy at reception (Marco, I think?) didn’t just point me toward the Duomo like everywhere else does. He told me about this tiny osteria tucked away near Piazza San Francesco where locals go for lunch, and honestly, it ended up being one of my favorite meals in Italy. The rooms themselves are surprisingly spacious for a historic building – I had number 12 on the second floor and could actually open my suitcase without rearranging all the furniture. The bathroom was modern without feeling out of place, though I’ll warn you the shower pressure varies depending on time of day (mornings are best).

Here’s the thing about staying in Pistoia versus Florence or Siena – you’re getting the real Tuscany experience without fighting crowds for every photo. Villa Di Malpasso gets this completely. Their breakfast isn’t some massive buffet situation; it’s more like what you’d hope for in a Italian home, with local pastries and coffee that’s actually strong enough to wake you up. The WiFi works well (tested it thoroughly while catching up on emails), and parking is included, which honestly saves you a headache since navigating these narrow streets can be… well, let’s just say it’s an adventure. I stayed there in late September and the place was busy but not chaotic – seems like they’ve figured out that sweet spot of being popular without being overrun. If you’re thinking about using it as a base for day trips, you’re about 30 minutes from Florence by train, but honestly, Pistoia itself deserves more than just a quick stop. The villa’s location puts you right in the heart of the old town, so you can walk to everything worth seeing, then come back to what feels like your own private retreat.

  This place is magical! It’s like living in a beautiful tree house. The room was very spacious with a comfortable bed and a clean and functional bathroom. The furnishings were delightful and the garden was peaceful. The wonderful breakfast spread was an added delight. There is a good family friendly restaurant within walking distance. The owner provided us with a very interesting itinerary for a great day of touring which was much appreciated. It is an easy drive to or from Florence.

  The hosts were amazing – they helped us with everything, we had an incredible dinner at their place – we strongly recommend you to stay there and have dinner in the garden – we had the entire garden only for us, in one word PERFECT!
