Velona’s Jungle Luxury Suites Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “Velona’s Jungle Luxury Suites” I thought it was some weird marketing gimmick. I mean, jungle suites in Florence? But walking into this place on Via Montebello actually made me stop in my tracks. They’ve somehow created this incredible tropical oasis right in the heart of Santa Maria Novella, and it works way better than it should. The lobby hits you with this lush, almost humid warmth that’s filled with the sound of water trickling and these massive plants that look like they belong in Costa Rica, not two blocks from the train station. You know what though? After spending a few days there, I get it – Florence can be overwhelming with all the marble and crowds, so coming back to what feels like a completely different world is actually pretty genius.
The suites themselves are where this place really shines. Each one feels like a private treehouse, which sounds cheesy but honestly captures it perfectly. My room had this incredible living wall of plants (real ones, not fake – you can tell because there’s this earthy, green smell that’s surprisingly soothing), and the bathroom… well, let’s just say showering under a rainfall head surrounded by tropical plants while looking out at Florentine rooftops is something I didn’t know I needed in my life. The beds are ridiculously comfortable – I’m talking sink-in-and-disappear comfortable – and the whole space just feels designed by someone who actually thinks about how people move through a room. Small thing, but there are enough outlets in useful places, and the lighting actually makes sense for both reading and getting ready.
What really sold me on this place though is how it fits into the neighborhood. Via Montebello is this quiet residential street that most tourists never find, but you’re literally a five-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella church and maybe ten minutes from the Duomo if you don’t mind the crowds. There’s this little alimentari around the corner where the owner, Giuseppe, will set you up with incredible sandwiches and local wine recommendations – he actually knows the hotel staff and they’ll sometimes arrange little picnic setups for guests. The 9.6 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there; it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Florence, but every single detail feels intentional and thoughtful. I will say parking can be tricky since it’s in the ZTL zone, but the front desk team (who are genuinely helpful, not just going through the motions) sorted that out before I even had to ask. If you’re looking for something completely different from the typical Florentine hotel experience – something that feels more like staying at a friend’s impossibly cool apartment – this place delivers in ways I wasn’t expecting.
