The St. Regis Florence
Florence, ItalySo I’ll be honest – I walked into The St. Regis Florence expecting another fancy hotel trying too hard to impress, but this place actually gets it right. The location alone is worth talking about because you’re literally on Piazza Ognissanti, which means you can walk to the Arno in like two minutes, and the whole Santa Maria Novella area is right there without being in the crazy tourist chaos of the Duomo crowds.
What really struck me was how they’ve managed to feel genuinely Florentine rather than just dropping a luxury chain into a historic building. The staff – and I mean this – actually know the city. When I asked about getting to Oltrarno for dinner, the concierge didn’t just hand me a map but told me exactly which bridge to take and mentioned that the sunset view from Ponte Santa Trinita would be perfect around 7:30 that evening. You know what I mean? That kind of local insight you can’t fake. The rooms themselves have this interesting balance where you get all the modern stuff you need (the shower pressure is fantastic, by the way) but the details feel authentically Italian. The marble work is gorgeous, and honestly, the beds are some of the most comfortable I’ve slept in – which matters when you’re doing 20,000 steps a day wandering around Florence.
Here’s something practical nobody mentions: parking is actually sorted if you’re driving, which is rare in this part of the city, and the entrance is discreet enough that you’re not dealing with crowds of gawkers every time you come and go. The breakfast situation is really well done too – they have this incredible selection of local stuff alongside the international options, and the coffee (obviously crucial in Italy) is proper Italian bar quality. I spent a few mornings just sitting there watching the piazza wake up, which sounds cheesy but was actually one of my favorite parts of staying there. The 9.4 rating makes total sense because it’s not just about the luxury touches – though those are definitely there – it’s that they’ve thought about the whole experience. You’re close enough to walk to the Uffizi or Palazzo Pitti without the nightmare of staying right in the thick of the tourist zone, and the neighborhood has actual Florentines living and working in it, which gives you a much better feel for the city. Plus, there are some excellent restaurants within a few blocks that locals actually go to, not just the obvious tourist spots.
