The Port Residence
Livorno, ItalyYou know what struck me first about The Port Residence? It’s tucked away on Via Enrico Tellini – this quiet residential street that feels worlds away from the tourist chaos, but you’re actually just a five-minute walk from Livorno’s historic center. I mean, you can still hear the distant hum of the port (this is Italy’s third-largest port city, after all), but it’s more like a gentle backdrop than anything intrusive.
The building itself has this understated elegance that’s very Italian – no flashy lobby or over-the-top anything, just solid architecture and rooms that feel genuinely comfortable rather than showroom-perfect. Honestly, that 8.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed there. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, which is rarer than you’d think, and they’ll give you proper directions to places like the Mercato Centrale instead of just pointing vaguely down the street. The rooms are spacious by European standards – I could actually open my suitcase without rearranging furniture, which felt like a small miracle. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night; you’d expect more noise being so close to the port area, but the street itself is residential enough that you’ll sleep well.
Here’s the thing about Livorno that most people don’t realize – it’s not just a cruise ship stopover. The city has this incredible seafood scene (try the cacciucco, seriously), and from The Port Residence, you’re perfectly positioned to explore it properly. The Quattro Mori area with all the best restaurants is maybe a ten-minute walk, and if you’re into the whole Venetian quarter thing – yeah, Livorno has canals too, just without the crowds – you can easily stroll there after dinner. Plus, and this is key if you’re planning day trips, the train station is close enough that you can actually manage your luggage without breaking a sweat. I did Florence as a day trip and it was completely doable. The hotel’s location just works in that practical, unglamorous way that makes a trip flow better. You’re not fighting through tourist hordes to get home, but you’re not stuck in some suburban nowhere either. It’s the kind of place where you’d actually want to spend a few days exploring Livorno itself – which, honestly, more people should do instead of just rushing off to the Cinque Terre.
