The Florence Tornabuoni Palace Boutique Apartments
Florence, ItalyYou know what struck me first about The Florence Tornabuoni Palace? It’s tucked away on Via dei Federighi – honestly, I walked past it twice before spotting the entrance. But that’s actually perfect because you’re literally a two-minute stroll from Via de’ Tornabuoni (Florence’s answer to Fifth Avenue) without dealing with the tourist chaos that comes with staying right on the main drag. I mean, you can slip out for your morning espresso at the little bar around the corner while the cruise ship crowds are still figuring out their maps.
The apartments themselves feel like what would happen if your stylish Italian friend inherited a palazzo and decided to do it up properly. These aren’t your typical hotel rooms – we’re talking actual apartments with kitchenettes, which is brilliant if you want to grab fresh produce from the Sant’Ambrogio market and pretend you’re living like a local for a few days. The restoration work is really well done too; they’ve kept all the character (those ceiling beams, the original stone details) but added modern touches that actually make sense. The bathrooms are particularly nice – proper shower pressure, which honestly can be hit or miss in historic buildings here. Only thing I’d mention is that some of the street-facing rooms can get a bit noisy in the early morning when the delivery trucks start their rounds, but that’s pretty much unavoidable anywhere in the centro storico.
What really sets this place apart is the location knowledge you get from the staff – they clearly know Florence beyond the obvious tourist spots. They pointed me toward this incredible little osteria on Via del Sole that I never would have found otherwise, and gave me the inside scoop on which churches have the best art with the smallest crowds (pro tip: San Felice in Piazza, about a five-minute walk away). The Santa Maria Novella neighborhood is sort of the sweet spot for staying in Florence – close enough to everything that matters, but residential enough that you feel like you’re actually in the city rather than just visiting it. You can walk to the Duomo in about eight minutes, hit the Oltrarno for dinner, and still come home to a quiet street where the only sounds are the occasional Vespa and maybe someone’s nonna calling down from her window. After staying here, I honestly can’t imagine doing the usual hotel thing in Florence again.
