You know what caught me off guard about the Serristori Palace Residence? It’s actually on the Oltrarno side of Florence, which honestly might be the best-kept secret for staying in the city. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Arno river on Lungarno Serristori – and when I say steps, I’m talking about a 30-second walk to the water where you can watch the sunrise hit the Ponte Vecchio without fighting crowds of tourists at 7 AM.

The building itself has this understated elegance that feels authentically Florentine rather than trying too hard to impress. The entrance doesn’t scream “luxury hotel” from the street, which I actually loved – it feels more like you’re staying in a well-appointed residence (hence the name, I suppose). The rooms have this perfect balance of historic charm and modern comfort, though I’ll be honest, some of the bathrooms show their age a bit. But the views… if you get a room facing the river, you’re basically getting a front-row seat to one of the most beautiful stretches of Florence. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work – they helped me sort out dinner reservations at places I never would have found on my own, little spots tucked away in the Santo Spirito neighborhood that locals actually frequent.

What really sells this place for me is the location’s practicality. You’re far enough from the tourist chaos around the Duomo that you can actually breathe, but close enough to walk everywhere that matters. The Pitti Palace is literally around the corner – I’m talking a three-minute stroll through quiet residential streets. And here’s something most people don’t realize: staying on this side of the river means you get to experience Florence’s evening rhythm differently. After the day-trippers head back to their buses, the Oltrarno comes alive with locals heading to aperitivo spots along Via Santo Spirito. The hotel sits right in the sweet spot where you can stumble back from dinner without navigating crowds, but still pop over to the Uffizi or Ponte Vecchio in about eight minutes on foot. Fair warning though – if you’re the type who needs to be in the thick of everything immediately, you might feel slightly removed. But personally? That’s exactly what made mornings so perfect, sipping coffee and watching the city wake up from what felt like a local’s perspective rather than a tourist’s.
