First Impressions

Walking up to Relais San Lorenzo on Via Cesare Battisti, you immediately get that feeling you’ve stumbled onto something special. The building itself has this understated elegance — not flashy, but you can tell there’s quality here. What really struck me was how quiet it felt despite being right in the thick of things. I mean, you’re literally steps from Lucca‘s main attractions, but somehow the street noise just doesn’t penetrate. The entrance has this welcoming, almost residential feel that makes you feel like you’re staying at a well-appointed friend’s place rather than a typical hotel.

Location & Neighborhood

Honestly, the location is pretty much perfect if you want to experience Lucca properly. You’re inside the famous city walls — which, if you haven’t been, are these incredible Renaissance fortifications that now serve as a park where locals bike and stroll. From Relais San Lorenzo, you can walk to the Duomo in about three minutes, and the Amphitheatre Square (Piazza dell’Anfiteatro) is maybe five minutes on foot. What I loved was being able to duck back to the hotel easily during the day, then head out again for evening aperitivo without any hassle. Plus, there’s actually private parking on site, which anyone who’s driven in Italian historic centers will tell you is worth its weight in gold.

The Rooms

The rooms have this lovely blend of traditional Tuscan charm and modern comfort that actually works — sometimes these combinations can feel forced, but not here. The beds are genuinely excellent; I’m usually a light sleeper, but I slept like a rock every night. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully designed with good storage and nice touches like quality linens. What really impressed me was the attention to soundproofing — despite being in the city center, you don’t hear much street noise once you’re inside. The bathrooms are well-appointed without being over the top, and everything just feels well-maintained and cared for.

Breakfast is served in a pleasant room, and while it’s not elaborate, it covers all the basics well with good coffee and fresh pastries. The whole pace of the place feels relaxed — you know what I mean? There’s no rushing around or corporate hotel efficiency that sometimes feels a bit cold.
