Hotel Description

You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany over the years, but Poggio Martino really caught me off guard – in the best way possible. It’s tucked away on this quiet provincial road just outside Cignano, and honestly, the first time I drove there I thought my GPS was leading me astray. The Strada Provinciale delle Chianacce isn’t exactly a main thoroughfare, but that’s actually what makes this place so special. You’re literally surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards, with that classic Tuscan countryside stretching out in every direction. The drive itself is gorgeous, winding through olive groves and past those stone farmhouses that look like they haven’t changed in centuries.

The hotel itself feels like someone’s elegant country home that just happens to take guests – I mean that in the best way. It’s got that 4-star polish without being stuffy about it. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with these lovely terracotta floors and wooden beams that give you that authentic Tuscan vibe without feeling like a theme park. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night – you’re far enough from any main roads that all you hear are crickets and maybe the occasional owl. The staff genuinely seems to care about the place too, which you can tell makes a difference. They know the area inside and out and actually give useful recommendations, not just the standard tourist spots.

The location is really something special if you want to explore this part of Tuscany properly. You’re about a 20-minute drive from some incredible hill towns that most tourists never see, and the whole Val d’Orcia area is right there. I spent one morning just walking the grounds with my coffee – they’ve got these beautiful gardens and terraces where you can sit and watch the sunrise over the valley. The restaurant (when it’s open) serves genuinely good local food, not the generic “international cuisine” you get at so many hotels. That 9.4 rating isn’t just inflated reviews – people really do love this place, and after spending a few days there, I totally get why. It’s the kind of spot where you actually relax instead of just checking off sightseeing boxes, if you know what I mean.

Reviews

  • We loved our 11 night stay and would definitely come back. Handy to many of the Tuscan hilltop towns. Peace and quiet. – Robyne from New Zealand – 5 July 2025 (9/10)

The authentic decor and the pool.

  • Very relaxed and good for visiting several highlights – Sebastiaan from Netherlands – 15 June 2025 (10/10)

We had such a great time at Poggio Martino. The rooms are big and has everything you need. We also had a little outside veranda that we made use of every day. The kitchen is well equipped and it’s easy to make your own dinner if you don’t feel like eating out. The pool is super clean and beautiful with more than enough sunbeds to relax. Everything is a small drive so perfect to explore different cities. Last but not least, Francesca is such a super host with always helping us whenever we had a question. I would definitely recommend staying here!

  • Exceptional – Michael from United Kingdom – 14 June 2025 (10/10)

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Exceptional – Rebecca from Italy – 4 March 2025 (10/10)

We had a great mini break here, I only wish we could have stayed longer. The apartment was perfect in every way. The location was great as we were in the peace and quiet of the countryside but we were able to get to local towns and other places for sightseeing within 15-20 minutes (Cortona, Lake Trasimeno, Montepulciano, etc). It was a cold and windy weekend while we were there but we were warm and comfy once we were back at the apartment at the end of each day. Definitely hope to come back for another stay!

  • Superb – Vanessa from Australia – 31 August 2024 (9/10)

Francesca was friendly and helpful. The chateau was perfectly suited to a young family and had a beautiful pool area to relax and grass area and games room to play. Had a wonderful and restful week here!

  • Exceptional – Marjo from Albania – 19 September 2023 (10/10)

What could be improved: Noisy guests

  • Superb – Piotr from Poland – 4 August 2022 (9/10)

Excellent localisation and of course we can say only the best things about Host – The Francesca The Great :))

What could be improved: Im my parent's opinion – lack of air conditioning

  • Nice stay under the Tuscan sun – Jody from Netherlands – 23 August 2022 (7/10)

Beautiful location and base to visit all Tuscany has to offer. Amazing pools with lovery tanning beds. The pool is also used by other guests, but it was never too crowded or noisy. The house and surroundings are wonderful and the views are amazing. Lovely and lush garden where the kids can play. Safe environment for toddlers to run around. Francesca is a very friendly and helpful host and the other staff was really nice too.

What could be improved: The appartment we stayed in is really dated (cupboards don't close, bathroom is old, chairs are old and uncomfortable) and a bit cramped for two adults and a toddler. The wheather was really nice so thankfully we did not have to stay indoors much, but if we would have stayed here during autumn/winter it would def. be too uncomfortable, not well equipped and small. We did not know the second bedroom did not have a window so you need to keep the door open to get some fresh air. The matrasses were a bit too hard for our taste. It would be great if the property would invest in airconditioning, because sometimes it was 30 degrees celsius during the night.
