Podere Sant’Antonio
Buonconvento, ItalyYou know what? I’ve driven past those generic Tuscan agriturismo signs a hundred times, but Podere Sant’Antonio actually delivers on the promise. It’s tucked away in this little hamlet called Resta – honestly, if you blink while driving from Buonconvento you’ll miss the turn. But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? The property sits on this working farm that’s been in the same family for generations, and when you pull up that gravel drive (parking’s no problem, by the way), you’re immediately hit with that earthy smell of olive trees and the sound of actual roosters. Not the charming kind you imagine – the loud, early morning kind that remind you this is a real place, not some Instagram set.
The rooms are in this beautifully restored stone farmhouse, and I mean restored properly – thick walls that keep things cool even in August, original terracotta floors that feel smooth under your feet, and those small windows that frame the Val d’Orcia hills like paintings. The owners, Maria and Giuseppe, live on the property and honestly treat you more like visiting relatives than paying guests. Giuseppe makes his own wine (it’s actually good, not just “charming local wine” good), and Maria will casually mention the best time to visit Montalcino before the tour buses arrive – around 9 AM, if you’re wondering. The breakfast spreads include eggs from their chickens, honey from their hives, and this incredible ricotta that spoiled me for the stuff back home. Check-in is refreshingly relaxed; they’ll meet you whenever you arrive and give you the kind of local recommendations that end up being the highlight of your trip.
What really sets this place apart is the location without being touristy about it. You’re a ten-minute drive from Buonconvento’s medieval walls and that excellent Saturday market, but you’re also perfectly positioned for day trips to Pienza, Montepulciano, and the Brunello vineyards. The evening quiet is something else – just cicadas and the occasional distant church bell from the village. I’ll be honest, the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms (it’s an old stone building in rural Tuscany, after all), but that turned out to be a blessing. The pool area overlooks rolling hills dotted with cypress trees, and there’s something almost meditative about watching the light change across the landscape with a glass of Giuseppe’s Chianti in hand. The 9.7 rating makes sense when you realize this isn’t just accommodation – it’s an authentic slice of Tuscan life that happens to have really comfortable beds and the kind of warm hospitality that makes you start planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Nothing!
What could be improved: Could not be helped, but long dusty rocky road to accomodation
Remote location, perfect for relaxing and slowing down.
What could be improved: The access road was in a pretty bad state during our stay.
The location is strategic for trips to explore the province of Siena. The only minus is the driveway - rocky, full of holes and steep hills. This is a price to pay for staying in a remote area, but it didn't detract from our overall impression of the holiday.
Great hosts
What could be improved: Nothing at all. It was perfect in every single way.
