Monteverdi Tuscany
Sarteano, ItalyYou know what’s wild about Monteverdi Tuscany? It’s basically perched on this medieval hilltop in Castiglioncello del Trinoro – and I mean properly medieval, not some Disney version. The first time I drove up Via di Mezzo, I honestly thought my GPS was broken because you’re winding through these narrow stone streets that feel like they haven’t changed in 500 years. Then suddenly you’re at this incredible boutique hotel that somehow manages to feel both ancient and impossibly sophisticated at the same time.
The whole place is actually built into the original village structures, which means every room feels completely different – some have these massive stone archways, others have tiny windows that frame the Val d’Orcia like living paintings. I stayed in October (perfect timing, by the way, because the summer crowds are gone but the weather’s still gorgeous), and my room had this heavy wooden door that creaked just enough to remind you where you are. The restoration work is just… well, it’s the kind of thing that makes you understand why this place has a 9.8 rating. They’ve kept all the character – the uneven floors, the original frescoes, the way sound carries through the stone corridors – but added things like heated bathroom floors and the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in.
What really gets me is how they’ve integrated the hotel into the actual village life. The locals still use some of the same pathways, and you’ll see older residents sitting on benches in the little piazzas, probably wondering what all these well-dressed tourists are doing wandering around their neighborhood. The restaurant sources everything hyperlocally – I mean, they’ll tell you which farm your pecorino came from, and it’s probably visible from your window. Speaking of food, don’t even think about skipping dinner there. The chef does this thing with wild boar that’s… honestly, I’m still thinking about it months later.
The spa is built into what used to be the village’s ancient cellars, so you’re getting a massage while surrounded by stone walls that are older than most countries. It sounds gimmicky, but it’s actually pretty magical. Just be prepared for the roads getting there – it’s about 20 minutes from Pienza on some seriously winding mountain roads, so if you’re prone to car sickness, maybe take something beforehand. Parking isn’t really an issue since they handle all that for you, but fair warning: your phone service gets pretty spotty up there, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on why you’re traveling. For me? Total blessing. Sometimes you need to be unreachable in a 13th-century tower room with a view that stretches to Montalcino.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: There was limited selection of food and other restaurants were very far away
What could be improved: We liked everything!
Here are a few of our favorite things about Monteverdi:
First, the location and views. Each morning, we went on long hikes through the rolling Tuscan hills, soaking in the breathtaking scenery of this UNESCO-protected landscape. Every evening, we watched the sunset in peaceful awe. Time slows down here — and you truly learn to savor each moment.
Second, the food. Every single meal was exceptional. The team sources fresh, local ingredients and crafts them into dishes that are both comforting and inspired. We looked forward to breakfast every morning, trying something new each time. And dinner? Even better. Riccardo and his team curated a seasonal menu that we absolutely loved — and since we dined there nearly every night, they even created a few special off-menu dishes just for us, which was such a memorable touch.
Third, the experiences. From wine tasting at Le Ripi to day trips through charming nearby towns, there’s so much to explore. We also made time to relax at the property — the pool, sauna, and spa treatments were some of the best we’ve ever experienced.
And above all, the people. Every member of the Monteverdi team was warm, welcoming, and genuinely dedicated to making us feel at home. Their hospitality created a space where we could truly unwind and be present.
Monteverdi is a place that stays with you — and we’re already counting down the days until we return.
What could be improved: We loved every bit at Monteverdi.
All team members provided us such a great and sincere hospitality. Not to mention that all facilities from rooms, food & beverages quality, restaurants, surroundings of the hotel; I have only one word to describe, are TOP NOTCH!
I have travelled to many countries and places and would normally look to travel/stay at somewhere different, I must say Monteverdi is one of the few places I am looking forward to go back again
What could be improved: Not a negative but just good to know - we went in March (off peak) and was quite quiet. We loved it and found it relaxing but just something to be aware of. Highly recommend visiting Pienza for a day trip.
What could be improved: Absolute nothing
