Mercure Firenze Centro
Florence, ItalyYou know what struck me first about the Mercure Firenze Centro? It’s got this perfect “sweet spot” thing going on – right in the thick of Florence but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the chaos of tourists dragging suitcases past your window at 6 AM. The location on Via Nazionale is honestly brilliant because you’re literally a five-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station (which saved my life when I had an early train to Rome), but you’re also close enough to the Duomo that you can just… wander over whenever the mood strikes.
The building itself has that classic Florentine thing where it looks somewhat ordinary from the street – I mean, it’s nice, but you wouldn’t necessarily pick it out of a lineup – then you step inside and there’s this unexpectedly stylish lobby with clean lines and modern touches that somehow don’t clash with the historic bones of the place. The rooms are what I’d call “thoughtfully updated” – they’ve clearly put money into renovations recently, with good lighting (thank god, because so many European hotels still think one dim bulb is sufficient) and bathrooms that actually have decent water pressure. The beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with the mattress all night, which honestly happens more often than I’d like to admit when traveling.
What really sold me on this place, though, was how the staff seemed to actually know Florence – not just the obvious tourist spots, but useful stuff like which gelato place has the shortest lines in the evening, or that if you walk down Via Faenza early in the morning, you’ll hit the market before it gets completely mobbed. The concierge gave me directions to this little osteria that wasn’t in any guidebook I’d seen, and it ended up being one of my favorite meals of the trip. Plus, they were genuinely helpful about practical stuff – like how to navigate the ZTL zones if you’re thinking about renting a car (spoiler: don’t), and where to find a decent pharmacy late at night. The whole experience felt less like staying at a corporate hotel and more like having knowledgeable friends who happened to provide room service. At 8.4 out of 10, it’s hitting that sweet spot where you’re getting legitimate four-star comfort without the stuffiness – or the prices – of the luxury places closer to the Ponte Vecchio.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The breakfast could do with additional cooked options
What could be improved: The hotel was a little expensive compared to other places we stayed in Italy but I would still stay here again as the pros outweighed the cost.
And cleaness
What could be improved: The price little bit high
What could be improved: No positive dislikes. Supply of cardboard mugs was an irritation
What could be improved: Nothing
Very clean quiet apartment & we were lucky to have a top floor apartment with a large terrace.
What could be improved: Nothing other than I found the bed a little hard
