Marignolle Relais & Charme – Residenza d’Epoca

So I’ve stayed at quite a few places in Florence over the years, and honestly, Marignolle Relais & Charme kind of surprised me. It’s tucked away on Via di San Quirichino – which, let’s be real, you’re probably not going to stumble across accidentally – but that’s actually part of what makes it special. You’re still technically in Florence proper, but it feels like you’ve escaped to this quiet residential pocket where locals are walking their dogs and the morning espresso ritual happens at a slower pace.

The thing about this place is that it’s what they call a “residenza d’epoca,” which basically means it’s housed in a historic building, and you can feel that the moment you walk in. The rooms have this authentic Tuscan character – I’m talking exposed beams, terracotta tiles, the works – but without feeling like you’re sleeping in a museum. The restoration work is really well done; they’ve managed to keep the old-world charm while making sure the Wi-Fi actually works and the shower has decent pressure. I mean, I’ve stayed in “historic” places where historic apparently meant “the plumbing hasn’t been updated since the Renaissance,” but that’s not the case here.

What I really appreciate is how they’ve struck this balance between intimate and comfortable. It’s not huge – you’re not going to get lost in endless corridors – but the common spaces feel inviting rather than cramped. The breakfast area has these lovely garden views, and in the mornings you can hear the church bells from nearby San Quirico (hence the street name, I suppose). The staff knows your name by the second day, which is refreshing after dealing with those massive chain hotels where you’re basically a room number. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – this is Florence, after all – but they’ll sort you out with directions to nearby spots, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you’ll probably want to walk everywhere anyway. The Oltrarno district is just a pleasant stroll away, and you know what? Sometimes the best part of staying slightly off the beaten path is discovering those little neighborhood trattorias that don’t have a single tourist in sight. That 8.9 rating makes sense to me – it’s the kind of place that does the fundamentals really well without trying to be something it’s not.
