You know what struck me first about Mabelle Firenze? It’s tucked away on Via Sassetti, which is honestly one of those little Florence streets that feels like a secret even though it’s right in the heart of everything. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Duomo – and I’m talking actual steps, not that “walking distance” nonsense hotels usually throw around. The building itself has this understated elegance that’s so much better than those flashy places that try too hard.

The thing about staying in Santa Maria Novella is that you’re in the thick of it without the tourist chaos of some other central spots. From Mabelle Firenze, you can duck into Via del Sole for that incredible little leather workshop (locals actually shop there), or wander over to Mercato Centrale before the crowds hit at 9 AM. The residenza – they call it that because it really does feel more like staying at a well-appointed apartment than a hotel – sits in this perfect sweet spot where you hear just enough street life to feel authentically Florentine, but not so much that you’re up all night listening to Vespas.

What really gets me is how they’ve managed to blend the historical bones of the building with modern comfort without making it feel like a museum or a sterile boutique place. The rooms have these gorgeous original details – think exposed beams and period touches – but the beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in Italian hotels, honestly) and the bathrooms work properly. I stayed there during the shoulder season in October, and while the place was buzzing with guests, it never felt cramped or rushed. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood; they sent me to this tiny osteria on Via delle Belle Donne that I never would have found otherwise. That 8.9 rating makes sense when you experience the little things – like how they time housekeeping so you’re not dodging carts in narrow hallways, or how the morning light hits the breakfast area just right. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to hang around the lobby with a coffee instead of just rushing out to sightsee.
