You know what struck me first about Locanda Fermento? The way it sits tucked into Mochignano like it’s been there forever – which, honestly, it probably has. I mean, you’re in this tiny frazione of Bagnone, deep in the Lunigiana valley, and suddenly there’s this beautifully restored place on Via Scroce that feels both rustic and refined. The kind of spot where you pull up (parking’s actually pretty easy, which is a relief in these mountain villages) and immediately know you’ve found something special.

The thing about staying here is that you’re really experiencing authentic Tuscan mountain life, not some sanitized version of it. The rooms have that perfect balance – old stone walls and wooden beams that remind you you’re in a medieval village, but with modern touches that actually work. I loved how quiet it gets at night; the only sounds are maybe a distant church bell or someone’s Vespa putting around the narrow streets. The breakfast… well, let’s just say they take their local ingredients seriously. Fresh ricotta, honey that tastes like the hillside flowers, and coffee that’ll wake you up properly for exploring the Apuan Alps.

What really sets this place apart though is how it connects you to the area. The staff – they’re locals who actually know which trails lead to the best views of the marble quarries, where to find the good restaurants in Bagnone (it’s maybe a 10-minute drive down the valley), and honestly, they seem genuinely excited to share their corner of Italy. I stayed in late September and it was perfect – warm days for hiking, cool evenings for sitting outside with a glass of local wine. The whole Lunigiana region is sort of overlooked by tourists rushing between the Cinque Terre and Florence, which means you get these incredible medieval castles and ancient villages practically to yourself. That 9.1 rating makes total sense when you experience how thoughtfully everything’s been put together – it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, it’s just doing the authentic Italian countryside thing really, really well.

  This was a lovely gem in the countryside. So reasonably priced that we got two rooms for ourselves and our daughter. We were disappointed when we found out that their restaurant was closed on Wednesday, so we weren't able to try it, but they recommended a wonderful place in town (Gugu! amazing experience). Dog friendly, nice pool, lovely staff.

  oltre alla camera, ottima come in generale la struttura, ho apprezzato la eccellente accoglienza. Piacevole disponibilità: orario della colazione adattato alle nostre esigenze; non abbiamo potuto provare il ristorante, già completo, ma ci è comunque stata servita una gradevole pizza.
