You know what caught me off guard about Il Pozzo di Santa Zita? The name translates to “Saint Zita’s Well,” and honestly, I was expecting something rustic and ancient – but this place is actually a beautifully restored gem that feels both historic and completely comfortable. It’s tucked away on Via Fontana, which is one of those narrow streets inside Lucca’s famous walls where you’d never find it unless you knew exactly where to look. And that’s sort of the point – locals will tell you that the best spots in Lucca are always hidden behind unassuming doorways.

The moment you step inside, there’s this lovely cool stone feeling (perfect during those sweltering July afternoons when the piazzas feel like ovens), and the staff genuinely seems to know their stuff about the city. I mean, they’re not just reciting tourist brochures – they’ll tell you which osteria actually makes the best tortelli lucchese, or that Thursday mornings are when the antique market on Piazza San Martino has the real finds, not the weekend crowds. The rooms themselves have this perfect balance of character and modern comfort. You’ll get original beamed ceilings and terracotta floors, but also proper air conditioning and Wi-Fi that actually works – which isn’t always a given in these historic buildings, trust me. The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious too, something I’ve learned to never take for granted in Italian city centers.

What really sets this place apart is how it feels like a local secret rather than a tourist trap. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Duomo di San Martino, but you’re also right near where actual Lucchesi do their daily shopping – there’s a fantastic alimentari just around the corner where you can grab prosciutto and pecorino for an impromptu picnic on the city walls. Speaking of the walls, you can rent bikes right from the hotel and be cycling on top of them within minutes – honestly one of the most peaceful ways to get your bearings in the city. The only minor thing I’d mention is that parking can be a bit of a puzzle (like everywhere in Lucca’s historic center), but the hotel staff will walk you through the whole ZTL restricted zone situation and help you figure out the closest spots. It’s that kind of attention to the practical stuff that makes you feel like you’re staying with friends who actually live here, not just passing through.

  The apartment was amazing. Very clean, modern, cool and spacious. The location is perfect as it’s very central and lots of fantastic restaurants on the doorstep! The host Rebecka was very kind and very helpful with recommendations as well as ensuring we had fresh towels and upkeep during our stay! Would highly recommend and will definitely stay again!

  The location is perfect and the ambience is great – had we known how good it was we would have booked for longer! A real benefit was meeting the owner to check in. Rebekah not only demonstrated her pride in the property and in Lucca as a place, she also gave us excellent tips about where to eat and what to do.
