Hotel Description
You know what hits you first when you pull up to Il Miraggio? It’s not just another Tuscan hotel trying too hard to be rustic – this place actually gets it right. Located right on the SP137 just outside San Quirico d’Orcia, it sits in this perfect sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk into town for dinner but far enough out to feel like you’re genuinely in the Val d’Orcia countryside. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward (trust me, after navigating some of these hill towns, you’ll appreciate not having to squeeze through medieval gates), and honestly, the staff at check-in seemed genuinely excited to be there, which isn’t always a given at fancy places.
The rooms – well, I mean, they’re gorgeous, but what really impressed me was how they’ve managed to blend that classic Tuscan aesthetic without making it feel like a theme park. The windows frame those postcard views of rolling hills that you’ve probably seen a thousand times on Instagram, except when you’re actually there sipping wine on your terrace, it hits different. The spa is where this place really shines though. It’s not huge, but it’s thoughtfully designed, and the treatments use local ingredients that actually make sense rather than just being a gimmick. I went for a massage after hiking around Pienza (about fifteen minutes away), and the therapist knew exactly what she was doing. The pool area tends to get busy around 4 PM when people return from day trips, but early morning or evening? Pure tranquility.
What sets Il Miraggio apart – and this is something you only figure out after staying at a few places in this area – is how they’ve positioned themselves in the local landscape. San Quirico d’Orcia isn’t as touristy as Montalcino or Pienza, so you get this authentic small-town vibe where the morning market is still mostly locals, and the osteria recommendations from the concierge are places where you’ll actually hear Italian being spoken at the next table. The hotel restaurant is solid (that 9.3 rating isn’t just for show), but honestly, some of my best meals were at tiny places in town that I never would have found without their suggestions. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms – not a deal-breaker, but if you’re planning to work remotely, maybe mention it when booking. Overall though, this is the kind of place that makes you understand why people fall in love with Tuscany beyond just the wine and scenery. It’s polished enough to feel special but grounded enough to feel real, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to experience the Val d’Orcia properly.

A special thanks for Angelo, Lorenzo, Ricini and Marianna, I have no words to describe how special was our stay. Everything special from the room to the food and service. Everything in miraggio has been magnificent and made with a lot of love.
A lovely stay in a charming historic hotel. – Utts-smith from United States – 10 June 2025 (10/10)
The director/manager Angelo was so wonderful, informative and engaging. Actually, all of the staff were professional, courteous and helpful. The breakfast is amazing, with a wide variety of food. Our time at the spa was equally magnificent, where we were pampered and well taken care of…highly recommend. The assistance with our luggage was sincerely appreciated. AND the view is to die for! The short walk to the old town was very convenient.
What could be improved: There is nothing the hotel can do about it, but being an old, tall, narrow building means there are many stairs, and different staircases. We were grateful for the railings but could have used a bit more railings and lighting to navigate them safely.Exceptional – Kfir from Israel – 7 June 2025 (10/10)

Amazing restaurant and staff. Very old school in a good way, the hotel director checks on you if all is good.
Room was great as well, large with a big shower and bathtub. Little gem in San Quirico d’Orcia
