You know what struck me first about Il Castelluccio? The fact that it’s tucked away on Via Antonio Caponnetto – honestly, I’d never heard of this street before, but it turns out to be this perfect little pocket that’s close enough to Arezzo’s centro storico without being right in the tourist chaos. The building itself has this understated elegance that screams “locals know about this place” rather than flashy tourist trap. When I walked in, there was this immediate sense of calm – maybe it’s the way the light filters through the windows, or how the staff actually seemed to recognize returning guests by name, but something about it just felt right.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, but with those little Italian touches that make all the difference. I mean, the linens were crisp in that way that makes you want to just sink into bed immediately, and the bathroom had this gorgeous marble that probably came from somewhere local – you know how Tuscany is with their stone work. What really got me though was how quiet it was at night. I was worried about street noise since we’re still in the city, but honestly, you’d think you were in the countryside. The air conditioning actually worked properly too, which – let’s be real – isn’t always a given in Italian hotels, even nice ones.

Location-wise, this is where Il Castelluccio really shines, and I don’t just mean it’s “convenient” – I mean you can actually walk to the good stuff without feeling like you need a map. The Basilica di San Francesco is maybe a 10-minute stroll, and if you head toward the old town, you’ll hit all those narrow streets with the antique shops that Arezzo’s famous for. Plus, and this is key if you’re driving, parking isn’t the nightmare it could be – there’s actually space nearby, though you might want to ask at the front desk about the best spots since the ZTL zones can be tricky if you’re not familiar with Italian traffic rules. The breakfast spread was honestly better than I expected – real prosciutto, local cheeses, and coffee that didn’t taste like it came from a machine. Staff seemed genuinely happy to help with restaurant recommendations too, and they steered me toward places that were clearly local favorites rather than tourist traps. With an 8.6 rating, it’s clear other people have figured out what makes this place special, but it still feels like a bit of a hidden gem.
