Il Borgo di Villa Castelletti Country Hotel
You know what struck me first about Il Borgo di Villa Castelletti? It’s not technically a borgo at all – it’s this beautifully restored villa that actually feels like stepping into someone’s elegant countryside home, just with better towels and room service. The moment you pull up that gravel drive on Via di Castelletti, you’re already fifteen minutes outside Florence’s chaos but somehow worlds away from the tourist madness. Signa itself is one of those Tuscan towns that locals actually live in – there’s a proper market on Thursdays, decent coffee bars where you won’t pay tourist prices, and honestly, the best gelato I found was at this tiny place just five minutes down the road (ask at reception, they’ll point you there).
The hotel itself has this wonderful lived-in quality that I mean in the best possible way. The rooms have actual character – thick walls that keep things blissfully quiet, original terracotta floors that are cool under your feet during those sweltering August afternoons, and windows that frame views of rolling hills dotted with olive groves. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there, which makes such a difference. Check-in was smooth, parking is free and right there (huge plus if you’re driving), and they actually remember your name after the first day. The restaurant leans heavily into local ingredients – I had this incredible wild boar ragu that the chef apparently sources from a farm about twenty minutes away. Breakfast happens on this lovely terrace where you can watch the morning mist lift off the vineyards while planning your day.
What really sells this place for me is the location strategy. You’re close enough to Florence that the train from Signa gets you to Santa Maria Novella in about twenty minutes, but you’re staying somewhere that feels authentically Tuscan rather than tourist-trapped. The hotel runs a shuttle to the station, which is clutch because the walk would be manageable but not particularly scenic. Evenings here are magical – there’s this golden hour light that photographers dream about, and the only sounds are church bells from the village and maybe some distant farm activity. It’s not trying to be a luxury resort, and that’s exactly why it works so well. The 9.3 rating makes perfect sense once you’re there – it’s the kind of place that does everything right without making a big show of it.
