I Grandi Di Toscana
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany, and I Grandi Di Toscana is one of those spots that just gets it right. It’s tucked away on Via Del Gargaiolo in Ciggiano – which honestly, most people haven’t heard of, but that’s exactly why it works. You’re about twenty minutes from Vinci (yeah, where Leonardo was born), and the drive there winds through these rolling hills with olive groves that look like someone painted them. The location is actually perfect because you get that authentic Tuscan village feel without being completely isolated – though I’ll warn you, GPS can get a bit confused on some of the smaller roads leading there.
The hotel itself feels like someone took a traditional Tuscan estate and updated it without losing its soul. When I walked in, the lobby had this warm stone flooring that’s probably been there for decades, and there’s always this faint scent of lavender and old wood – you know that smell that historic Italian buildings have? The staff here actually remembers your name after day one, which sounds small but makes such a difference. My room had these thick walls that kept everything incredibly quiet, even though there were families with kids staying nearby. The windows opened onto views of the countryside, and honestly, I found myself just standing there in the morning with my coffee, watching the mist roll off the hills. One thing I really appreciated – the WiFi actually works well throughout the property, which isn’t always a given in rural Italy.
What really sets this place apart is how they handle the details. The restaurant uses ingredients from local farms (the tomatoes taste like actual tomatoes, if you know what I mean), and the wine list focuses on smaller Tuscan producers you won’t find at every tourist spot. I had some of the best ribollita of my trip there, and the server – Paolo, I think – spent ten minutes telling me about the vineyard where their Chianti comes from. The pool area gets morning sun but has enough shade for afternoon reading, and there’s this terrace where locals sometimes stop by for aperitivo, which gives you a real glimpse into how people actually live here. Check-in was smooth, parking is free and plentiful, and they helped arrange a cooking class in a nearby village that turned out to be a highlight of the whole trip. With a 9.4 rating, it’s clear I’m not the only one who thinks they’ve figured out how to do hospitality right – it’s that rare combination of genuine warmth and competence that makes you want to extend your stay.
