Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Florence over the years, and Hotel La Scaletta al Ponte Vecchio hits that sweet spot where you feel like you’re actually living in the city rather than just passing through. The moment you walk down Via Guicciardini – which, honestly, most tourists rush past on their way to the Pitti Palace – you’ll notice this isn’t your typical tourist trap territory. The street has that authentic Florentine vibe where locals actually shop for groceries and kids play football against ancient walls.

The hotel itself sits in this beautifully restored building that somehow manages to feel both historic and comfortable. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from Ponte Vecchio, but here’s the thing – you’re on the Oltrarno side, which means you get all the convenience without the circus of crowds that camps out on the other side of the river. The rooms have this lovely mix of period details and modern touches that actually work together (unlike some places that try too hard with the “Renaissance meets iPhone” aesthetic). What really got me was how quiet it stays at night, despite being so central – something about the way the building sits back from the main pedestrian flow, I think. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood too, which sounds obvious but you’d be surprised how many hotel workers in Florence have never actually explored beyond the Duomo-Uffizi triangle.

You know what really sets this place apart though? It’s the little things that make you feel like you’ve found a local secret. The breakfast room overlooks this charming internal courtyard where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of tour groups. And the concierge – well, they pointed me toward this tiny wine bar on Via Santo Spirito that I never would have found otherwise, the kind of place where the owner’s grandmother still makes the antipasti. The 8.6 rating makes total sense when you consider that you’re getting genuine neighborhood character without sacrificing comfort. Sure, the elevator is one of those classic European tiny ones, and the WiFi can be a bit temperamental on rainy days, but honestly, if you’re the type of traveler who cares more about experiencing Florence than checking off Instagram spots, you’ll love it here. Plus, parking is actually manageable in this area if you’re driving – there’s a garage just around the corner on Via de’ Coverelli that the hotel can arrange, which is basically a miracle in this city. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself taking the long way home just to walk through the Santo Spirito neighborhood, maybe stopping at the market or that little gelateria that doesn’t even have a sign.

  The location was excellent! We seemed to be central to absolutely everything & no where was far by foot! Our room was opposite a quiet courtyard & we slept really well! The room was comfortable & spacious. This was one of the main reasons we chose to book this hotel as many other hotels had reviews saying people couldn’t sleep due to local noise. I can assure you we did not hear a thing & slept soundly at Hotel La Scaletta, it was a welcome escape from our energetic lively days! 😆 The views from the roof top were also breathtakingly beautiful. We didn’t book dinner in advance & so they were fully booked unfortunately. We were able to have drinks earlier on the balcony & roof top however, so at least we could get to see & enjoy the views.
  
  What could be improved: Nothing! We loved everything about the hotel!
  
  If I were to make only one very small comment – it would be that we found the roof top bar staff a little young & inexperienced! It didn’t really affect our enjoyment however! We loved our stay in every way!

  Every staff member greeted and treated us pleasantly, professionally, warmly, and helpfully. The roofdeck is simply spectacular. The sumptuous breakfast buffet up there was an easy choice throughout our stay, and we decompressed from travel with a cocktail and sunset views the afternoon we arrived. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the location is central and handy to all our destinations. My daughter loved gazing out those tall windows in our room.
  
  What could be improved: We just wish we could have stayed longer! The building is stairs-dependent and a little maze-like, which was fine for us and kind of entertaining. May not be for everyone, access-wise, but we loved it.
