Hotel Granduca SPA & Parking
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places around Tuscany, and Hotel Granduca honestly surprised me in the best way. It’s right on Via Senese – which, if you know Grosseto at all, puts you in this perfect spot where you’re not dealing with the old town’s narrow streets and parking nightmare, but you’re still close enough to walk everywhere that matters. The spa part of the name isn’t just marketing fluff either; they actually have this really nice wellness area that I didn’t expect from a 4-star place. The parking situation alone makes it worth considering – I mean, you try finding a decent spot in central Grosseto during summer and you’ll understand why having your own guaranteed space feels like luxury.
What struck me most was how the staff seemed to actually know the area. When I asked about getting to the coast, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic map – he told me exactly which beaches locals go to (apparently Castiglione della Pescaia gets crazy crowded, but there’s this spot near Punta Ala that’s worth the extra drive). The rooms have that solid, unfussy feel that Italian hotels do well when they’re not trying too hard to be trendy. Mine faced the courtyard, which was actually perfect because Via Senese can get a bit noisy with morning traffic, though honestly it’s nothing terrible. The bed was properly comfortable – none of that rock-hard mattress nonsense you sometimes get. And you know what? The shower pressure was excellent, which sounds boring but matters when you’ve been walking around Maremma all day.
The breakfast spread was better than I expected too, with actual local stuff mixed in with the usual hotel fare. They had this pecorino that was clearly from somewhere nearby, not just generic cheese, and the coffee was the kind of strong that makes you remember you’re in Italy. The spa facilities were genuinely relaxing – not huge, but thoughtfully designed and never felt crowded when I used them in the evenings. What really sold me on this place was the location’s practicality; you’re close enough to explore the Maremma countryside (those Etruscan sites are incredible if you’re into that sort of thing), but Grosseto itself has more going on than people give it credit for. The Saturday market is worth timing your stay around, and there’s this wine bar called Enoteca Scali that’s maybe a 10-minute walk away where locals actually drink. For the price point and that 8.1 rating, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for – nothing flashy, but solid and genuinely comfortable with people who know their business.
