Hotel Atlantic Palace
Florence, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Hotel Atlantic Palace? It’s actually tucked into this really authentic slice of Florence that most tourists completely miss. I mean, Via Nazionale runs right through San Lorenzo – and honestly, that’s where you want to be if you’re trying to get a feel for how Florentines actually live. The hotel sits in this 19th-century building that’s been renovated but still has that slightly worn elegance that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere with actual history, not some sterile chain property.
The four-star rating feels about right – it’s polished enough that you’re not dealing with sketchy plumbing or threadbare towels, but it’s not trying to be some luxury palace either. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know their neighborhood inside and out. The guy at the front desk (Paolo, I think?) gave me directions to this tiny trattoria around the corner that I never would have found otherwise, and he was spot-on about which mornings the San Lorenzo market gets crazy busy. The rooms are… well, European hotel room sized, but the beds are actually comfortable and the AC works properly, which honestly isn’t always a given in older Florentine buildings. There’s something nice about opening the windows in the early morning and hearing the market vendors setting up – it beats traffic noise, and you feel connected to the rhythm of the city.
Location-wise, you’re maybe a ten-minute walk from the Duomo, but more importantly, you’re right in the thick of real neighborhood life. The Central Market is literally around the corner (the noise dies down by evening, don’t worry), and you can walk to Santa Maria Novella station in about five minutes if you’re hauling luggage. I stayed there during shoulder season in October, and while the area gets lively during market hours, it actually quiets down nicely in the evenings – not dead quiet, but that pleasant hum of people heading to dinner rather than tourist chaos. The 7.7 rating makes sense to me because it’s not perfect – the elevator is tiny and sort of temperamental, and the WiFi got spotty on the upper floors – but it delivers on what matters most. You’re staying somewhere that feels authentically Florentine rather than like a sanitized tourist bubble, the price point is reasonable for what you get, and you’ll probably end up having better meals and more interesting conversations with locals than if you’d booked somewhere more obviously touristy. It’s the kind of place where you might actually run into the same shopkeeper a few times and start getting nods of recognition.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Noisy lift next to our room
What could be improved: Breakfast, no real choice, seemed to have run out of food options. Wouldn't have gone for breakfast option . That said would definitely recommend hotel, just not choose breakfast option
What could be improved: Old rooms
What could be improved: The pillows were very hard. We stayed 7 nights. Had it been 1 or 2 nights it wouldn’t matter that much.
What could be improved: Was not able to get to my room with the elevator. I think this maybe applies to 50% of the hotel, but that's a rough guess.
What could be improved: Shower small but it is a very old building, so you need to make allowances. All in all manageable, good selection for breakfast but it is continental.
What could be improved: Being an old building we could hear our neighbours
