Horto Convento
So I stumbled onto Horto Convento through a friend who’s lived in Florence for years, and honestly? I get why locals are protective of this place. It’s tucked away on Viale Ludovico Ariosto in San Frediano – you know, that neighborhood across the river where actual Florentines still live and work. The building itself is this converted convent (hence the name), and walking through those heavy wooden doors feels like stepping into someone’s beautifully curated home rather than a hotel. The ceilings are impossibly high, original frescoes peek through in unexpected corners, and there’s this sense of quiet that’s hard to find in central Florence.
What really struck me was how they’ve managed to keep the soul of the place intact while making it actually comfortable to stay in. I mean, old convents aren’t exactly known for their creature comforts, but somehow they’ve threaded that needle perfectly. The rooms feel spacious – a miracle in Florence – and the beds are genuinely good (I’m picky about this stuff). The bathrooms have proper water pressure, which… well, if you’ve stayed in historic buildings in Italy, you’ll appreciate that detail. There’s also this little courtyard garden where I’d grab espresso in the mornings, listening to the church bells from Santo Spirito drift over the neighborhood. It’s maybe a twelve-minute walk to Ponte Vecchio, but it feels worlds away from the tourist chaos.
The San Frediano location is actually brilliant once you figure it out. Sure, it’s not smack in the center, but that’s exactly the point. You’re in the heart of the artisan quarter – there’s this incredible leather workshop literally next door, and the morning market on Piazza Santo Spirito (five minutes away) is where I got the best produce I’ve ever tasted. The staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood too, not just the obvious tourist spots. They pointed me toward this tiny osteria on Via dell’Orto that I never would have found otherwise. Parking can be tricky around here – like everywhere in Florence – but they’ll help you navigate the ZTL zones, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need a car anyway. The whole experience feels more like staying with knowledgeable friends than checking into a hotel, which is probably why it’s got that 9.2 rating. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re actually experiencing Florence rather than just visiting it.
