You know what? I was honestly a bit skeptical when I first rolled up to the Grand Hotel Terme & SPA on Piazza Italia – it’s got that classic Italian grand hotel look that can sometimes mean “tired and outdated.” But honestly, this place surprised me in the best way possible. The location is actually perfect if you’re serious about the whole thermal spa thing that Chianciano is famous for. I mean, you’re literally in the heart of the action, and the thermal parks are basically a five-minute walk away. The piazza itself gets pretty lively in the evenings with locals doing their passeggiata, which I found charming (though if you’re a super light sleeper, maybe request a room facing away from the square).

The spa facilities here are what really set it apart from your average hotel – and I’m not just talking about some basic wellness center they slapped together. These thermal treatments actually use the natural spring water that the whole region is built around, and you can tell the staff knows their stuff. The pools have this mineral-rich water that leaves your skin feeling incredible, and the thermal circuit is pretty comprehensive. I spent way more time there than I planned, honestly. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place – comfortable beds, decent bathrooms, nothing too fancy but everything works. Some of the rooms have been updated more recently than others, so it’s worth asking when you book if that matters to you.

Here’s the thing about staying in Chianciano Terme – it’s not Florence or Rome, and that’s actually part of the appeal. The staff at the Grand Hotel really gets this; they’re not trying to be something they’re not. Instead, they lean into what makes this place special: the healing waters, the slower pace, the fact that you can actually relax without fighting crowds everywhere. The breakfast spread is pretty generous with local specialties, and the dining room has these big windows that look out over the town. I found myself lingering there longer than usual, watching the town wake up with my espresso. The whole experience feels authentically Italian in a way that’s getting harder to find – real thermal treatments, genuine hospitality, and a location where you can actually experience how locals live. It’s not going to blow your mind with cutting-edge design or trendy amenities, but if you want to unwind properly and maybe do your body some good with those famous thermal waters, this place delivers exactly what it promises.

  Our room was clean and tastefully decorated – it seems to have been modernised recently. The Spa was the main reason we went and it didn't disappoint – we really enjoyed it. There are about 3 different saunas of varying temperatures, an ice cold shower and mist, ice, 2 large hot jaccuzi pools with water massage features and 2 relaxing rooms. We used it twice, once when we got there and once in the morning which was included in our room package. Breakfast was amazing – lots of delicious, fresh pastries and cakes and a selection of savoury foods too. Coffee made to order – perfect!

  What could be improved: A pool with salted water has nothing to do with the thermal bathes that are in neighborhood. This is not clear from description.

  The Spa Facilities were very Good. The outside Pool on the Roof, was OK, nothing special but adequate. The only issue was one of the Sunbeds collapsed whilst my wife was on it. When this was reported to reception, they did not seem concerned at all. She had to request an Ice pack for her bruised elbows.
  
  What could be improved: The Hotel is positioned in an are of the town that is unfortunately like a 'Ghost Town' I understand this is not the Hotels fault, but did make the experience less enjoyable
