You know, I’ve walked past the Grand Hotel Principe Di Piemonte countless times while strolling through Viareggio’s centro, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just commands attention on Piazza Puccini. The building itself is this gorgeous Belle Époque masterpiece that somehow manages to feel both grand and welcoming – not easy to pull off, but they’ve nailed it. What really struck me the first time I stepped inside was how the lobby maintains all that old-world elegance (we’re talking original marble floors and hand-painted ceilings) without feeling stuffy or museum-like. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re trying to feel settled somewhere new.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Viareggio properly. You’re literally steps from the beach – I mean, you can hear the waves from some of the sea-facing rooms, especially in the early morning when the town’s still quiet. But here’s what most visitors don’t realize: being right on Piazza Puccini means you’re also at the heart of the evening passeggiata route. Around 7 PM, locals start their traditional stroll, and you get this wonderful window into authentic Italian life just by sitting on the hotel’s terrace with an aperitivo. The rooms themselves are spacious (rare for Italy, let’s be honest) and many have those classic wooden shutters that actually block out light if you need to sleep in after a long dinner at one of the nearby trattorias. Speaking of which, the hotel restaurant is solid, but honestly, with places like Osteria del Mare just a five-minute walk away, you’ll want to explore the neighborhood.

What really sets this place apart – and why it’s earned that 9.6 rating – is how they’ve managed to preserve the hotel’s 1920s character while updating everything that actually matters. The Wi-Fi works perfectly, the air conditioning is quiet and effective (crucial during Viareggio’s humid summers), and the bathrooms have been beautifully renovated with modern fixtures. I particularly loved the rooftop terrace area, which gives you these sweeping views over the Versilia coast and the Apuan Alps in the distance. It’s the kind of spot where you find yourself lingering longer than planned, especially during golden hour. The only minor thing I’d mention is that parking can be a bit tricky during peak season – the hotel has arrangements with nearby garages, but it’s worth asking about when you book. Overall though, if you want to experience the Italian Riviera with a touch of old-school glamour and genuine hospitality, this is exactly the kind of place that’ll make your trip memorable.

  This was probably the best hotel I ever stayed in. The staff was exceptional, offering to assist us in any way possible. Additionally, the hotel does an extraordinary job giving the guests everything possible, even a going-away gift of chocolates and water. There are staff members throughout the property assisting the guests. The facilities are beautiful, with all details attended to, including beautiful art sculptures. The buffet breakfast is one of a kind. The rooftop pool is spectacular. I will be back.
